Oregon Fishing Update
#1
Fisheries Update
February 28th – March 6th, 2003

The Columbia had a poor show of both salmon and sturgeon this week. The best catches came from the gorge as it appears most of the sturgeon are making gluttons of themselves in the middle river stretches. The “forecast” is for “sunnier skies” ahead!

Steelhead action on the north coast was rather impressive last weekend. But that was last weekend. The dropping and clearing conditions have proven less productive for steelheaders. Only a steelhead fisherman would hope for more rain! The Umpqua River is providing good fishing for steelhead in the seven to 14 pound range in water which remains high from the last precipitation.

Sturgeon angling on the lower river is dead slow, however. There are still some steelhead to be caught in the eastern part of our state. They are summer run fish but those anglers willing to put some time in, can expect some results for their efforts. Crabbing has been fair in Tillamook Bay and is expected to improve this week at Yaquina Bay.

The herring, abundant only a week ago at Newport, have left the bay. Rock and jetty anglers are finding ling cod. Caution is urged at any time but especially when the surf is high. Other rockfish and greenling species are available in the mix. Henry Hagg Lake, Alton Baker Canal, Cottage Grove and Creswell Ponds received stocked trout this week.
