I have a #4 Rod/reel/line. The line is a dry line.
I love it, so light and responsive.
I looked for some time to find a Sinking line, but found none.
In a sporting goods store, a guys suggested an add on.
It's a little bit of line that sinks.
You add it onto the end of the #4 dry line, and instantly you have a #4 sinking tip.
Has anybody else tired a thing like that? I never heard of it. I bought a package of Two, and now I want the weather to warm up so I can give it a try.

I looked at it, connected Loop to Loop at the end of my fly line and instantly the thought that popped into my line was dealing with something that should have been long and straight, but had an umnanagable soft spot in the middle.[  ]
So now I really cant wait to get down and try it out.

[black][size 3]We were on some stillwater once. I was using a TYPE II line and getting a fish once in awhile, while my hubby was into them good. He was on a TYPE IV. I didn't want to switch out spools and line in the middle of the lake, so I put one of those 4 footers on my TYPE II with about a 4 foot piece of 6lb Flouro. That was the ticket! Fish every cast.[/size][/black]

You shouldn't have any problem finding 4w sinking lines. Maybe the shops where you live don't have them, but they can order them or order them online.

I've been to dozen places looking for those small sinking lines. I couldn't even find a #5 Sinking tip or other..

[black][size 3]Thudpucker, I will agree with Evil, the sink tips do work, but anyone getting into fly fishing, I tell them get a reel and ONE spool to start. Dry Line and a TYPE II is my suggestion. That will cover just about anything. With the TYPE II, you strip a little faster if they are shallow or on warm days, just count down.[/size][/black]
[black][size 3]Then if you get into it like I have (money being the first concern) you fine tune it. I have an Intermediate, Type II, Type IV, and a TYPE VII in Density Compensated (sinks straight) then a TYPE III Wet Cell (forms a belly-good for weedy places) And finally Depth Charge which is 70' of Intermediate and 30' of Lead core 250 Grain.[/size][/black]

[black][size 3]When you go looking for a sinking line it will look like this (ex: WF7S7 - Airflo brand) which means this is a Weight Forward Taper 7 weight line the "S" means sinking, that will sink 7+" a second - very fast.[/size][/black]
[black][size 3]Intermediate will sink1.25-1/75" a sec.[/size][/black]
[black][size 3]Type II 1.75"-2.75" a sec.[/size][/black]
[black][size 3]Type III 2.50" - 3.50" a sec ( SA chart on these, some companies may vary a little)[/size][/black]
[black][size 3]Most Freshwater sinking line will be a Weight Forward Taper.[/size][/black]
[black][size 3] Ex. of a floating will be WF7F or DT7F (Double Taper) TT7F (triangle Taper) etc.[/size][/black]

[size 3]I find I use a Type II more than any. In the warm months I will count to 20 then start to retrieve, adjusting the counting time on where and when fish hit.[/size]

I never heard of those numbers.
At one time I had a #9 Fenwick Steelhead/Silver Salmon rod.
I had a bunch of lines for that rod.
Among them was a #10 Weight Forward, Shooting Taper, fast sinking line.(it had a litteny of designations. A veritable Pedigree)
It handled like a length of Teflon coated lead line.
It was the most productive line I had for Rainbow. It was always down in the weeds or rocks.
However in a fast river it was a constant pain. It was always wrapped around a rock. Usless.
For a gift, I got a #5/6.
Jeez, what a willow switch! Who can cast with a Limp thing like this?
But in one afternoon I went from a #9 to a #5 and never looked back.
I leaned to love that one.
Once again it was the heavy line that would sink down into the weeds was the big winner.
So now, years later, I'm down to a #4.
Maybe for Christmas I'll see a Type II under the Tree?

I already have a wf f line and a type II sinking line ready to be rigged up on the reel and the extra spool.. once I get all that together.. who knows.. I might be able to catch a fish or two.. It seems that finding a full 4wt sinking line is easier to do on-line than at the retail level. I always wait for the fly shows to come around. Visit the Orvis booth where they pass out $25 coupons. I got several last year and used a couple on-line. believe the only requirement is that you spend a minimum of $50 and only 1 coupon per purchase.[/size][/green][/font]
