As if the winter storm wasn't enough? I guess we're getting that snow pack we always worry about this time of year! Needless to say, this is going to put a damper on this weeks fishing opportunity.

Columbia sturgeon and smelt are certainly temperature sensitive as neither species is showing any signs of life. Some keeper sturgeon are being caught around the mouth of the Willamette River using last years smelt and this years sand shrimp. The warmer water temperatures of the Willamette are a bonus for this fishery.

Retention of sturgeon on the lower Willamette and Columbia will change to Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays only starting February 1st. The estuary will remain open to retention through April. Other regulations and restrictions may apply. Read the regs or the complete TGF report. The rules are complex this year.

A spring chinook was taken in the bank fishery around Longview this week but it's a far cry from a hot jumpstart to the season that holds so much promise.

The Willamette is one of the bright spots this week as it has been in the last several weeks for sturgeon anglers. A boat angler landed the first confirmed spring chinook of the year from the lower Willamette on Saturday, January 24th. Details and information regarding this catch as well as the earlier Clackamas springer are in the full TGF report.

The North Coast didn't produce any impressive results this week and the Wilson fished the worse of them all. Spawned out hatchery steelhead are starting to rear their sore heads so if you want to avoid them, stay out of the slower, deeper slots.

The Siletz also fished well this last week and some fish came from Lake Creek on the Siuslaw drainage.

Hampton, Walling and Junction City, Mt Hood Community Pondsand Walter Wirth Lake will receive plantings of broodstock rainbow trout this week. E.E. Wilson Pond will also receive fish but it will not open until February 1st.

Most rivers will be out for the weekend as flood conditions continue to be a reality for the next several days. This will be a good weekend to prepare for better fishing ahead so get those chores done, and leaders tied! And be sure to schedule a time to drop by our booth at the Sportsman Show Feb 4 – 8th!
