Ok - now that I have your attention, it was anything but…

Showed up at 7:30. Lines in the water off the new campground by 7:45 in 28 feet of water.  Started right in between the furthest out buoys.  No bites or marks for the first hour.  Drilled 5 or 6 holes in the vicinity of my first two holes and nothing.  Decided to move closer to shore, so went to the closest buoy and drilled a couple new holes.  BOOM!  Must have dropped on a school, because I iced 10 fish in about as many minutes.  Still good size too - most 9” with several over 10”.  This action died off fairly fast at about 9:15 and then it was one here and one there for the next 2.5 hours.  Near the end, I just started drilling random holes in the vicinity.  Had about a 50% hit rate.  Drill hole, drop, catch the resident perch within that 5’ radius and then it would go dead.  Ended the day at 12:15 with 15 keepers.  Only threw back 2 and all kept were at least 8” with the average being 9”.  Best combo was a chartreuse and yellow Halie with a white backside tipped with perch eye.  They liked waxies too. All fish were tight to the bottom.

It was nice to meet Dubob on the ice.  He was gunning for 10 fish and had 7 when I left.  Hope he reached his goal.  Also spoke to Perchinski who was fishing near the old SP ramp somewhere.  Sounded like his morning went similar, but I’ll let him chime in on details, if he so chooses.

Dug in at 7:30am.  13-deg, but no wind.  Got 9 fat perch from 8-10am over 31', then they slowed down.  As many 5-7"ers in between.  About a dozen of us fishing west & south out from the ramp, and another dozen groups in the NE quadrant by the dam.  Moved out to the 42-47' range around 10:30 and got another dozen nice ones.  No feeding frenzy, just one here, one there, along with an equal # of dinks.  Best rig all morning was a sagging drop-shot with an eyeball on a mosquito hook --- instead of keeping the line tight to the weight, I let the bait sag down to the point where my line looked as tho there was nothing on it.  The fish wanted that weightless eyeball barely off the bottom.  Got a couple on Hali's and tungstens with perch slivers, but those light biters sucked that weightless eyeball in & were hooked.  A cold wind came up around 11-ish, so walked off the ice 30-min later..  Looked like the area out from new state park also had its share of anglers this morning.

Currant Creek OR Electric Lake Invite
Posted by: rgreenland - Yesterday, 08:03 PM - Forum: Utah Fishing General - No Replies

I have both locations on my bucket list this year but hesitate to go to either place alone.   Would like some company.  Don't need to hang out if you don't want...just getting older and like to have at least one other person around when I go places like that.
I have never been to Currant Creek - don't know what to expect....and I'm just dumb enough to push it a little more than I should.

I'm open weekends or I can usually take a day off during the week.
I have a snowmobile and/or 4wheeler.

One person would be great or if there are several that wanted to go - the better.

Let me know if you are interested. I fear its going to be a short ice season.

Thanks!
RG

  Rockport update Thurs 1/30/25
Posted by: Mildog - Yesterday, 02:59 AM - Forum: Utah Fishing General - Replies (7)

Hit Rockport again today, we started at about 12:30 pm fished until
About 4Pm . We Tried near the spot we fished last trip, no action in 5 minutes. Time to move, brother relocated to a spot about 400 yards away. Moved over by him non stop from first drop till we left. Depth 30 feet. I started counting when I hit bottom and closed bail, the average was a 3 count for a bite, the longest I counted was 20 and that was only once or twice. I never even bothered to set up my fish-finder. My Brothers was solid fish constantly, I figured why take the time. We lost count of how many we caught, I’m sure in the hundreds.
Kept 42 9- 10.5 Inches, we let countless 8.5-9 inch go and tons of dinks. They all swam back down easy from that depth. Action is fast when you find them and the size varies by area. My brother talked with a guy closer to the ramp area and he said all he could get were

Dinks. My brother told him a general area and depth to try to try. About an hour later he showed up nearby us, he started getting into them right away and he said the size was much better , thanks for heads up. The Ice is growing, I’m guessing 10inches plus now, I didn’t measure but the auger time and depth to Get through was noticeably more from just a few days ago. The Weather is supposed to get warmer wet and or snowy for a few days and even nights but the ice should hold up until it chills down again. Should be lots of good action to come.

Good luck!

  Deer Creek 1-30
Posted by: gofish435 - Yesterday, 02:33 AM - Forum: Utah Fishing General - Replies (5)

A couple of us made it back to Deer Creek today.  We launched at the main boat ramp and fished the same area as our previous trips.  We used fast sinking lines and size 6 & 8 leech and bugger patterns in red/green/yellow and red/yellow/orange.  We picked up six fish, all rainbows from 14" to 19" long.  We had a few other hits but not many.  Each time we have gone there the fishing has gotten slower.  The weather was great for the end of January.

The water temperature was 36-37 degrees and the visibility in the water was about 8'.  The reservoir is almost 80% full and rising.

There were a few shore anglers, three kayaks, and one guy on a pontoon.  Some of the folks on shore were getting bites but having a hard time getting the fish in.  We had a couple of ice sheets from the north end of the reservoir float by in the afternoon.  The parks folks had one lane plowed on the ramp for the boaters.  There is still a lot of open water to fish.

There were a couple of adult bald eagles and one youngster while we were there.  There were also four Loons on the water.  I have never seen them this time of year before.  It's usually not until March/April that they start to show up.

  Annual Cascade Lake Trip
Posted by: trueblue2 - 01-30-2025, 04:00 PM - Forum: Utah Fishing General - Replies (1)

Heading to Cascade once again for 2/3 thru 2/8.  Read that the jumbos are a little smaller and fewer in number this year.  Doesn’t matter; it’s just nice to be there and appreciate what nature offers.  Will write another post on return.
Looking forward to visiting Tackle Tom’s.  What an incredible inventory of ice fishing gear!  If any of you want me to bring something back for you, ie baits, lures, etc, let me know. You can send me a PM.
Will be 88 soon and looking forward to a few more Cascade trips in future years.
Really enjoying Rockport this year, my new Smitty Sled, and all of your posts on local conditions.  Good luck to you; be safe.

  Echo today 1-29

Just like RP a week or so ago, Echo has slowed down to a crawl.  Perch of any size few & far between.  Dug in S of the ramp at 10:15, staying until 12:30, fishing 42-50'.  Got one 8"er and half-doz 4"ers.  Fish were on the bottom and shadowing my baits up & down, but few takers, and the lightest bite at that when they did.  Walked over to another angler on the way in who had over a doz nice fatties.  Said they came thru at 32' from 8-10am.  Tried the new state park on the drive back, fishing those 28-30' community flats.  Just the tiniest of bites & not one hook-up.  Two other guys 50 yds away had one 10"er between them.  Another gorgeous bluebird day, 13-deg when I out on, 30 when I got off.  Ice is 9".  All sun & no wind.  It's either go to RP or get to Echo before sunrise.

  Deer Creek ice/open water?
Posted by: gofish435 - 01-29-2025, 06:19 PM - Forum: Utah Fishing General - Replies (5)

We are thinking about fishing DC tomorrow and would like to know if anyone has been by there today to check out the current conditions at the main state park ramp.

We are going to be fishing from our tubes so we are looking for open water with shoreline access to launch.

Thanks for any information anyone has.  We don't want to drive for two hours to find out that everything is iced up. Sad
