At some point the water is going to stiffen up. Here's a video on how to self-rescue (not if but when). From personal experience, three times in a 100 yards trying to get off the lake, the important part is TO NOT panic when you get the initial cold water shock. Instead, tread water until your breathing slows down then lick and swim out. Good luck this year. Be safe.
