Don't Put That Boat Away Just Yet! Deer Creek 10/16 - iconoclasticPaul - 10-17-2004 That's right, for all you walleye anglers thinking of winterizing your boat, don't! I went to Deer Creek instead of Starvation due to some last minute cancellation, and lack of a fishing buddy at the last minute as well, so I went to Deer Creek. The weather was warm and windy, winds out of the south creating some whitecaps. I roared out to the north side near the dam by the bouys, I turned the boat around along the hwy. I shut off the motor and let the winds drift me over 50/60 feet of water with heavy 3 ounce bottom bouncers and a crawler harness. I let the wind blow me all the way to the charleston area and caught 9 walleyes. What a way to save on the gas and the wear and tear of the motor, by doing this! I would just start all over again by powering back up to the bouys, and do it again. I had a blast going back and forth 4 times all day plus a sojourn into the wallsburg bay area which in that area sucked and didnt see many on my sonar. On the main lake I saw lots of baitfish and some bottom dwellers near the baitfish! So the walleye fun got turned on. The wind is your best friend indeed, as I didn't realize I was low on gas down to the 1/4 tank left so to conserve gas and maximize fun. I was there from 11:30 til 4:00 pm. I would stay and fish longer into the evening but I hadda go take my kids to Hee Haw corn maze which I had a lot of fun scaring my kids in the dark by running ahead and waiting for them by hiding in the corn. I would go into the art of imitiating wolf/coyote howl which I have to admit it does sound errie and I heard that I made a couple of small kids cry... (Yikes sorry kiddies) and some adult were heard to say, "lets hunt that damn varmint down!" I had to chuckle for such is the essence of halloween and kids. My wife thinks I need to start acting my age... Nah, even if I'm 40, I would still be a kid in my heart. [signature] [signature] Re: [iconoclasticPaul] Don't Put That Boat Away Just Yet! Deer Creek 10/16 - iconoclasticPaul - 10-18-2004 Water temp was 58 when I got in and when I got out at four it was 57 degrees. The eyes were 15-19 inches, in 50/60 feet of water. I suspect the bigger ones were in deeper but I am missing a part of the drift sock rope with the floats on it, as the winds were abit strong to keep my 3 ounce bottom bouncers on the bottom at 60-70 feet. If I had that part of the drift sock I am sure I could have gotten it on the bottom and scored some big eyes. Oh well at least I know they are there from my sonar, and I tried it in that depth I couldn't feel it ticking the bottom... [signature] [signature] |
