"Teach your children well...." Bird Island 6/20 - fonduvfishin - 06-22-2005 Well, I apparently can't teach my children well so I employed the services of one Fishhound on a trip to Bird Island. We couldn't have asked for a better day, no "W," hardly any recreators, warm - later to become hot temps, and a good fish bite early on, the first hour we boated 3 kitties and a mudder or two and then it completey shut down. We did manage to get a few more mudders and white bass later on but the cat bite was done. I do want to say that while we were anchored in a spot along the island, another boat cruised right up to us at best a 100 feet away, anchored and then commenced to cast their lines right into the area we were fishing!!! I certainly did not want to create a scene with my son in the boat, so I didn't say anything, I did continue to cast near their boat thinking that they might get a clue but to no avail. [mad] At any rate Joey enjoyed the day fishing and so did the "elder statesmen" I couldn't help but watch how attentive Joey was with the Fishhound and his mentoring of knots, lures, and fish lore. So I took a pic of the scene (attached) and followed up the day with the results of one learning experience and the day's catch(attached) The elation on his face says it all - . Thanks Fishhound, you set a great example for an impressionalble young lad who aspires to be just like Chuck and his dad. [] By the way who was the artist that pefromed that great song in the 60's or was it the 70's? [angelic] [signature] Re: [fonduvfishin] "Teach your children well...." Can't wait till my daughter is old enough to take out there for her first catfish. Too bad about the idiot club out there not respecting who was there first. Bird Island 6/20 - Fishhound - 06-22-2005 It has been a while since I have been around kids and I had forgotten how many questions they can come up with. I was a pleasure fishing with you and your son. It was also a great day on the water. About the bozos on the other boat, I think that was also a good oppportunity to share with Joey that scenario as well. Hopefully he picked up on the situation and can use their poor example of sportsmanship of what not to do, when he gets out on his own. And, as far as teaching your children - from what I saw, you are doing just fine ! Joey seems like a well behaved and is a well mannered young man, and with his attentiveness, he will be a success and a great fisherman - just like his dad. As a side note: It is more often than not the case, that a complete stranger(teacher, instructor, trainer, coach) can have an easier time teaching a child or spouse to perform an activity, than a loved one has. For example : I always recomend that skiiers have someone else teach thier loved ones to ski - it seems to cause less pressure for the student and allows them to learn more quickly and have a "neutral" learning environment. Often, I have noticed that people can become embarrased when they make mistakes in the presence of loved ones or those people they would not want to disappoint, by fearing that they may not measure up to what they percieve might be the performance expectations. Bird Island 6/20 - fonduvfishin - 06-22-2005 Chris , I think we started fishing about 7:30 am on the northwest side of the island and the bite stopped around 9, of course we had some "buddies" show up next us and I think they got a cat or two as well. We moved to the east side and caught only bullheads. We concluded that we must have caught the tail end of an early morning bite. Chuck you are right on with your points about children and their willingness to learn from anyone other than their parents. In addition, the sportsmanship and courtesy factors we witnessed (or lack therof) hopefully will be another lesson learned. HA69, you were right on with CSN&Y for some of us that was rather easy, I believe it was the late 60's. [signature] Re: [fonduvfishin] "Teach your children well...."
