Nephi area? - bigpapafish - 08-11-2005

I'm going to be spending a couple of weeks down in Nephi and was wondering where is a good place to do a little fishing. I'm going to be down there for work so I'm looking for someplace not to far off that I can hit after work.
I've searched past posts and Burriston ponds sounds good for planter trout. I was wondering where else to try? What about Wales, Chicken creek or Gunnison reservoirs? How is the fishing at Yuba?
I have never fished any of these areas and am looking forward to trying new lakes. Any info on these lakes or somewhere else I should try would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Yearns reservoir east of Manti is heavily stocked and is very good fly fishing for planter rainbows.

If you wanted to come that far north you could try Santaquin Creek in Santaquin Canyon for trout. Use small worms or grasshoppers or tiny spinners, or flies.

[cool]I'm not super familiar with that area, but I've been told that the little creek that goes up the canyon (heading to Moroni, Mt. Pleasant, etc.) has browns in it, and there's supposed to be some beaver ponds in that area that have some really nice browns in it. Good luck.

Your not too far from Yuba lake. There are perch, trout and maybe a few walleye and Northerns if they survived the dam drainage.

You might want to try Nine Mile res. Its just south of Sterling and right off the road. You can't miss it. Have been told there a some nice bows. PaliSade (hope I spelled that right) has some nice fish also. Its a state park. Its just east of Sterling

Ocean lives in Nephi. He checks the forum regularly (noticed he hasn't logged on since yesterday), and I'm sure he will respond, but it wouldn't hurt to send him a PM.

You should try Salt Creek. This is the creek that comes out of Nephi canyon. You can fish it by the main road that goes up to Fountain Green or you can turn at the Nebo Loop road and fish any where up the canyon. I use to do real good up by the campground (can not remember the name) up the Nebo loop canyon. I another place worth trying is Burstans Pond (SP) near Mona.

Just north of Nephi about 10 minutes (the next exit on I-15, I believe) you will find Burraston Ponds. A lot of people go there, so it gets fished heavily, and most of the fish caught are little planter rainbows, but they can still be fun. The DWR also uses Burraston Ponds as a dumping place for the old spawners from their hatcheries, so occasionally you will catch a big trout there. A couple of years ago, I was fly fishing (near the bottom, with sinking line and a black wolly bugger) from my tube, and I hooked the biggest fish I had ever caught. At first, I thought it was a snag. Then it started moving. Then it pulled me and my tube all around the pond. My leader was light and I didn't want to break it, so I played the fish for a long time (15-20 minutes)--or should I say that it played me as it pulled me around the pond? When I finally netted the fish, it turned out to be a great big golden carp. No kidding! Its scales were yellowish brown, almost golden, in color. I wondered if it had escaped from some kid's gold fish bowl and grown to become the monster of Burraston Ponds. Anyway, after admiring the great golden carp, I released it back into the pond. So, it's still there for you to catch. I imagine that if you do catch it, you can ask it to grant you three wishes.

How far away are ya willing to drive? There are some bows planted in the pond just east of nephi.Usually they go down the river though. There used to be a bunch of big browns in the river till they stopped the flow.Burrastons gets stocked with browns and bows and an occasional albino trout. Mona res has a ton of huge carp if you like fishing for them.Yuba is a 35 minutes away and they have some huge bows in there.I have done great there with jakes lures before the water came up .The bows might be hard to come by but if you catch one it will be worth the wait.Theres aslo other places about 45 minutes away like paliSades ,9 mile, gunnison res.E-lake and huntington is an hour away from nephi amd scofield 15 minutes away from e-lake.There is also dmad west of nephi about 45 minutes away.

there is some good places around that area.. but not as good as they as they once were.. Wales res is packed full of carp and mudcats..gunnison res has not had any water in it for the last 3 years except this year it's full now..there were some nice bass and perch in there at one time and even some great big channel cat's over 25 lbs but i don't think that you could even catch a carp out of it this year.. 9 mile would be the best bet for a big rainbow i was catching some in the 3 lbs range last ice season.. palaSades has some nice tigers (trout not musky) in it and i did catch some nice rainbows there as well..redmond is just past gunnison and this time of year the channel cats and bass can be alot of fun.. pike are not to active this time of year there..but have heard that the pike in yuba have not only survived but are doing quite well feeding up on them rainbows and perch the DWR have planted in there..right below the town of gunnison there is a place i use to catch some nice channel cats out of the sever river on chuncked chub or chickin livers..most all the small creeks and rivers around that area have fish of some kind or another in them.. mosty trout but the bigger rivers have cat's and carp..

good luck to ya!!

Hey thanks for all the great info everyone.
It sounds like I'll have quite a few places to try in my off hours. I'm going to have to review all this info well and make some decissions. Now the question for myself is where will I start.
I really appreciate all the great responses and info from the people on this board.
