new to freshwater - evandostert - 09-24-2007 Just got a new boat. Ready for Lake Mead. I am going out wens and thurs. I have been a life long saltwater guy. I am thinking I will try tossing a few diving plugs and jigging. Then if no luck I have a carp bait and dough ball hooks. What areas are you guys fishing. I have been told las vegas wash or up towards overton arm of the lake. Any carp fishers. Should put up a good fight. I am catch and release most of the time anyway. I used to file off the barbs in salt water when hitting up stripper boils. [signature] Re: [evandostert] new to freshwater - BaySport - 09-24-2007 Welcome to BFT! Glad to see your fired up about fishing. Lake Mead is no comparison to saltwater fishing, but it is what we have and can be challenging. Jigging is the ticket now. Yesterday proved to be an excellent jig bite off Sand Island, on the Las Vegas Bay side, with fish from 3-5 pounds. Everyone scored. Topwater is still happening in the mornings and evenings. Small boils occurred yesterday near Gov't Wash. Look for the birds to give them away. Most of the fish caught on topwater are small, from 1-2 pounds. Carp? Sorry, I've never played that game. I have been out twice so far and think, I was using the wrong stuff. I am gonna hit up the guys at laker plaza for some fishing brain power. The Second Thursday of the month at Lake Mead Lounge in Henderson. As far as the carp go I would anchor by the tires. There are alot of carp inside the marina. Good Luck and Welcome. Stripercraze [signature] Re: [stripercraze] new to freshwater - evandostert - 09-25-2007 I should check that out. Carp are ugly but put up a fight. I don't think it would be very fair at the marina [signature] Re: [evandostert] new to freshwater - Mead_Stripers - 10-08-2007 Welcome to the Board, Evan. Most of the guys who post on this board are very experienced in fishing the Boulder Basin of Mead. If you prefer carp (because of the fight), I suggest Hideaway Cove which is west of Callville Bay. Timing is pretty important, too. Most of the guys fish early. I, on the other hand, fish through the night. Afternoon fishing is very slow but you can luck out sometimes. My friends and I have inadvertently caught 2 large carps on anchovies while fishing for stripers. You're right, they pack a huge fight and it can be downright challenging when you're using 6 to 8 lb test. There's this dough bait that you can make with this wheat/barley powder and bananas. Carps love this. You can only fish this dough bait from the bottom though. I've seen a lot of carp just swimming on the surface. Your best bet here is to get a piece of sweet Hawaiian bread (in most supermarkets), tear off a piece and just flyline it. As it floats away from you, a carp will just gobble it up. You don't need a big piece because their mouths are relatively small. May want to go with a treble hook to secure the bait. Well, good luck. I do most of my fishing on the Arizona side of Mead near Temple Bar where there is less people. Plenty of big carps there, too. Come to think about it, carp is everywhere. No one hardly fishes for them, and when they do, they release them. So they're quite abundant at Mead. Best regards, Paul [signature] |
