Island Park Reservoir - flyguy66 - 12-24-2007 Has anyone ice fished IPR this season? I'll be heading up there next weekend and would like to give it a shot. It's been a while since I've ice fished there so I'd appreciate any information on areas of the reservoir and/or strategies to increase the chance of success. Thanks. White 1/2-3/4 glow jigs tipped with crawler worked the best, fishing off the bottom in fifteen to five feet of water. I would set up in the pre-dawn with a lantern. It seems I always have a few strikes at first light, and then maybe a strike every 1.5 hours after that. I hear Lakeside can be good this time of year, but have not tried it. Island Park is usually a first ice place for me, so I am not to familar with its fishing posibilities as winter establishes itself; I will appreciate any feedback on your trip to help me consider if it is worth a second trip up. Good Luck, Ovid Creek [signature] Re: [OvidCreek] Island Park Reservoir - flyguy66 - 12-24-2007 Ovid Creek, Thanks for the info. I'm actually staying in a cabin at the lakeside area so I may give it a try there. We also have a couple of snow machines so we may try other more isolated spots. I'll get back to you with a report. I've snowmachined into the west end several times and would rather fish the West End that Lakeside Lodge, Buttermilk or Dam area. The Trudes area isn't going to be more than 5-10 feet deep right now but I'm sure it would be good. Be careful driving snowmachines on the ice on the west end if you don't know where the springs are. On the west end I've seen large areas of open water when the ice is a foot an a half thick only a hundred yards away. I just use my standard rainbow and kokanee jigs/ice flies at Island Park reservoir. I like small tube jigs and glow in the dark never hurts. I normally do best with lighter colors of jigs but have had days were black or dark colored jigs do best. I like to tip my jigs with a meal worm, wax worm or peice of night crawler and a little powerbait never seems to hurt. I generally fish 1-3 feet above the bottom. Kokanee are often suspended. You could catch them at any depth. [signature] |
