][][], After countless hikes in, after many blizards, after being skunked on a few ocassions; my son and I fiinally had the Pali
es fishing experience of our dreams! As mentioned in another post I planed on fishing Ririe, but no ice! We made the decison at 2:00 PM to head up to Palies and did so at a 40 mph crawl due to icy roads. I will not post the exact area I was on, other than it was on the main reservoir; I have earned this area after many scounting expedetions on the ice; doesn't mean I own it just means I have put in my dues. Well after a thirty minute hike in we began to set up. I drilled seven holes with ice around 5-6 inches with no slush. My auger flooded, so I set up with what I had. After setting two poles we had a big hit and two minutes later a nice 17' 2 pound cutt! I really only got six poles out, and had planned on converting all my rigs to either white glow jigs, or 1/8 once pink sparkle jigs with a half artifical worm tail, but the action remained constant. There was not five minutes go by without a big hit. Two hours went buy before I made myself put my coat on or get a drink. My son was in heaven landing cutts that ranged from 15 -18' all gave a good fight and put our drags to the test. When night set in we went to a two pole lantern set up, but primarly just used one with the Vexilar. We fished 25 feet from shore at a depth of 28 feet and caught fish from 12 feet to 25 feet of water. Light jigging really helped, but we landed a few just dead polliing it. All jigs were tipped with a third of a crawler. By the end of the night we had iced 19 cutts and 2 browns one brown near 22' and close to three pounds. All fish looked liked they should be in a muscle and fitness magazine for fish, no fat ones[cool]
The hike out can be brutal, next time no sled just backpacks, and I may even bring my ice ax and crampons. One hour to hike out and push/pull up all of our gear[crazy]
