mill meadows report - MountainMan - 04-23-2003
Got to the reservoir at about 7 or 8 in the morning. Fished with a variety of baits, lures, and flies near the dike until about 9. All in all, we caught 1 brown, and 2 rainbows between the three of us, and only had one or two other bites. All the fish caught were caught on worms, and of course, my rainbow was the smallest fish caught[pirate]. Faught hard though, I just missed the fast perch action. Anyone know where they are this time of year?

I know there was muskie put in, have you heard how they are doing and how big they are? the dwr put them in to help get the fish that have WHIRLING DISEASE. been thinking about heading down soon to give them a try any help would be great

To get rid of Whirling Disease who told you that. The only reason I've ever know for stocking muskie is trash fish (chubs, perch and shiners).
Their is muskie in Fish lake, Johnson, and Mills meadow. Most of them are small and that the reason for the limits they have.

muskie in fishlake when did they do that and why? muskie are put into waters to thin out other fish when there is no big predator fish to get them down. unless something happend to all the lake trout in fish lake and I didnt know. or is there a fishlake that has them in that I don't know about?about the whirling disease I have a friend that works for the dwr and he told me that but he works with the big game so take it from that. thats what he told me

The musky were originally put in Mill Meadow to control whirling disease, believe it or not. When the disease first occurred in that drainage, it was treated to remove all trout. The musky were introduced to eat any stray trout to help keep them out of the system. It was hoped if there were no hosts (trout) for several years the disease would be eliminated. It was experimental and unfortunately failed. Bummer.

This is the second post I've seen on the site saying that there are Muskie in Fish Lake. The theory is that they strayed from Johnson res., just up the road. Granted, it's been a couple of years since I've been, but I've never seen one there. Below is the list of fish found in Fish Lake from utahfishfinder.com

Fish Lake (Sevier County) [ul] [li]Trout limit: 4, no more than 2 may be lake trout/mackinaw and only 1 may be a lake trout/mackinaw larger than 20 inches. [li]Yellow perch limit: 50. [li]When ice fishing, the size of the hole may not exceed 18 inches. [li]Possession of a gaff while fishing is unlawful.[/li][/ul]
No mention of Muskie anywhere. Imagine that.

No Musky yet Nomoose, but a four pound largemouth or fiesty bow will actually pull you around in the Yak. I did hook a Yak fish off San Diego one time that snapped 30 pound test after a five minute sleigh ride. Not sure I would've wanted whatever it was in the Yak with me. LMAO

I talked to the bio out of Cedar City and he told me they have been unable to get a regular supply of Tigers for Johnson. He also said they never saw any survival of the ones they did stock there. I think they have discontinued the Johnson musky program (I'm not positive about that though). Goes to reason, if they couldn't make it in Johnson, they wouldn't migrate to Fish Lake. May be one or two out there though.

Nomoose, here is an interesting article on Muskie in the state. It is called Facts About Tiger Muskie from UtahOutdoors.com. It states that the Muskie planted in Johnson, just up from Fish Lake, did not survive. It makes no mention of Muskie in Fish Lake. Since it even lists the Muskie planted out here last fall, I'm guessing it's fairly recent, and accurate.

Hope your not counting on those Cottonwood fish. They drained it completely last summer to work on the dam. I hear they are going to drain it again within the next two to three years. Bummer............

They didn't plant Cottonwood yet from what I got from DWR. They are waiting until the repairs are done to plant it, but they did plant fingerlings in Bullock last fall. I have had 2 people argue with me as to weather they planted fingerlings or 20" fish. I talked to the biologist that planted them, so I'll believe him. I can forward his emails to anyone that is interested in the Muskies planted out here and the progress on Starvation Walleye.

THANKS FOR THE INFO ,but I did have that already. I have put a lot of time in find thing on muskie. not saying that I know it all, I dont I still have lots to learn. that what makes this board so great. It's that 99.9% of all the people on here are willing to hepl other hookers out.It's not like when I was little and no one told there spot or there lure or bait to use so they were the only ones that got fish.
