FISHING 101 PROGRAM - TubeDude - 04-15-2008 [cool][#0000ff]Hey gang, how about a BFT "Fishing 101" program...for all ages? DWR does a great job with their youth fishing club, but there is nothing for older newbies...or those who would like to learn more about specific aspects of fishing.[/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]In the past, we have had several get-togethers to learn how to make jigs, build rods and rig for different fishing situations. I get repeated requests for not only some more "jig parties", but for sessions on basic tackle and techniques. It seems like there are a lot of folks who really love fishing but who are frustrated by just not knowing where to go and how to fish once they get there. [/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]Anybody who reads our posts over a period of time knows that we get a lot of newbies who beg, grovel and plead for online help. And, for the most part, our group of helpful members is usually able to help...somewhat. But, there is no better way to learn than "hands-on" and "one-on-one"...even in a group session.[/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]I spent some time in the DWR youth program and I observed firsthand how many parents tried to tag along and be a part of the learning process. I had a couple of dads and grampas in our group that got more of my time than I gave to the kids. Glad TubeBabe was there for the kids.[/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]I also know, from lots of PMs and personal conversations that we have members who have a passion for fishing but simply do not have any money left over in the budget...after costs of food and shelter...to spend on frivolous stuff like fishing tackle. Part of the Fishing 101 program is to set up a little "socialistic" stockpile of tackle...donated by those who can spare it to go to those who need it but can't afford it.[/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]So, I have a few "little used" outfits that I will be using to start the stash. Also have a half dozen tackle boxes and a bunch of nets, stringers and stuff I no longer use. Ditto on lures. Anybody who has visited my "ROOM" knows that I could help stock a few boxes.[/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]I build and repair fishing rods and also maintain and repair just about any kind of reel. So, if you have something that needs some work, bring it by and I can probably give it new life in the hands of someone who will give it a good home. On the other hand, if someone can afford to donate a few dollars for the program tackle, the money will go into a fund to buy new line, reel lube, hooks, sinkers etc.[/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]I have a large 3 car garage with heating, overhead lighting and some tables. I can hold classroom sessions at my place whenever a few folks can make it. We can also use the pavillion at Willow Park Pond, now that it is getting warmer, and that would be ideal for a session on casting practice.[/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]I know we have a lot of experienced and talented anglers on the Utah board. Over time, I would like to be able to call on volunteers to conduct part or all of different sessions on different aspects of fishing. Topics might be anything from Basic knots, hook styles, lures, flies and flyfishing, Reel types and operation, Fishing with bobbers, Sessions on Species, Fighting and landing big fish, Fish care and preparation, Catch and release practices, etc. We will be completely open to what attendees want, but we will announce the topics in advance.[/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]I am making this a sticky, and we can keep it at the top for awhile. Anybody who wants to attend classes, donate tackle or assist in giving the classes can reply at the end of this post or can send me a PM. All PMs will be kept confidential and nobody ever needs to feel badly about asking for help...either in the classroom or if you need help with tackle. That's what the program will be about...helping those who need help through the generosity of those who were once there themselves and who want to give back.[/#0000ff] [signature] Re: [TubeDude] FISHING 101 PROGRAM - orvis1 - 04-15-2008 I would be happy to help with anything I can, let me know. [signature] Re: [TubeDude] FISHING 101 PROGRAM - Fishhound - 04-15-2008 [#000000]Great idea Pat ![/#000000] [#000000][/#000000] [#000000]I think we had some really good success and a good turnout with the fishing Seminar you and I did last summer. [/#000000] [#000000][/#000000] [#000000]I think it would be even better to do one this year in the spring to be in time for the warm water fishing season.[/#000000] [#000000][/#000000] [#000000]You can count me in on the project. [/#000000] [#000000][/#000000] [#000000]I'll see what I have in the way of tackle and gear as soon as I can get back into my tackle storage - without the assistance of the hounds.[/#000000] [signature] Re: [TubeDude] FISHING 101 PROGRAM - catfishaholic - 04-15-2008 I will help in any way possible I have some extra tackle but would love to learn about jigs. Great idea Pat [signature] Re: [TubeDude] FISHING 101 PROGRAM - Vivid-Dawn - 04-15-2008 Nifty! I just got back from Willow Pond, so I know how to get there (and won't get lost, like I did going to the catfry party LOL) I just bought a "catfish kit", which has a few extra things I probably don't need, and anybody's welcome to have them. I don't know if you want our schedules, to determine the best time to accommodate most people (I figure not everybody would be able to make the exact same dates/times). Saturdays are not the best for me... I could do it between 2-5 P.M. then. Fridays are the best for any hours. Sunday...weeelll, I could go, but should be a good little girl and go to church instead - even if it's no fun like fishing is. Then weekdays are always changing, since my godmother has me working on a project for her, and tells me to come over spontaneously. [signature] Re: [TubeDude] FISHING 101 PROGRAM - Kent - 04-15-2008 Great idea Pat. Willing to help however I can. [signature] Re: [kentofnsl] FISHING 101 PROGRAM - TubeDude - 04-15-2008 [#0000ff][cool]I'm thinking of seeing if we can set up a special FISHING 101 board. We can have a "Panel of Pros" who will field specific questions and conduct sessions on their specialties. We will also divide up the topics, into individual posts...like we have done on the archives...and we can collect writeups, website links and pictures for each of the subjects. [/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]In short, we can put together our own little Utah BFT Fishing Encyclopedia. Sure would make it easier on some of the hesitant newbies who want to ask basic questions but who do not want to get flamed or laughed at. [/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]So, for all of you more experienced tanglers out there, let me know what subjects you feel quailified to handle...and I will start building our core group of "consultants". [/#0000ff] [signature] Re: [TubeDude] FISHING 101 PROGRAM - lunkerhunter2 - 04-15-2008 Awesome idea pat! I have some gear to donate including a couple rods, reels and tackle boxes. Nothing fancy, but they serve their purpose. I will also volunteer as a "consultant" on occasion. [signature] Re: [TubeDude] FISHING 101 PROGRAM - albinotrout - 04-16-2008 I will help out when I can. Due to work I am not always in town but things are changing to where I will have more time off. I used to teach scouts so I have a few extra rods and reels that can be used. I can help with many areas of expertise as well. Let me know where I can help out. [signature] Re: [TubeDude] FISHING 101 PROGRAM - Out4aFloat - 04-16-2008 I like the panel of "consultants" idea. If anybody has specific questions they may feel more inclined asking an experienced angler who has volunteered his knowledge. I don't know if I have much extra gear to donate. But I will try and find some to help out. And would be willing to help donate special jigs for certain waters. (Love a new excuse to have to paint more jigs)[] [signature] Re: [TubeDude] FISHING 101 PROGRAM - gshorthair - 04-16-2008 Hey tube I would be willing to help with this project. I have taught fishing classes before. I still have most of my materials. I know I could come up with some extra tackle if I looked around the house. When things are working a little better I will pm you with some more info. painted any swimbaits lately? gshorthair [signature] Re: [TubeDude] FISHING 101 PROGRAM - Flycasting - 04-16-2008 Excellent idea! [cool] I can donate flies, feather jigs, bucktail jigs, etc. I also have an old (but useable) tackle box or two hanging around. I would also be willing to help out with the consulting if needed. I know how to catch a species or two. [:p] [signature] Re: [Flycasting] FISHING 101 PROGRAM - TubeDude - 04-16-2008 [#0000ff]Thanks everybody. I am going to set up a separate board, in the Archives and Info section for Fishing 101. We will have a permanant (changeable) list of all volunteer "consultants" and the topics upon which they will field questions or handle programs at scheduled meetings.[/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]I will also be collecting various articles and website links to build a reference section for each of the topics...rods, reels, lines, etc. So, if anybody has some favorites, keep them ready to send over as soon as we get the structure put together.[/#0000ff] [signature] Re: [TubeDude] FISHING 101 PROGRAM - Lundman - 04-17-2008 Great to see this idea get off the ground - I can donate a few tackle boxes and tackle. Maybe we could make it a "Pay it Forward" kinda thing. I would love for the good will of fishing to be spread to all. [signature] Re: [TubeDude] FISHING 101 PROGRAM - trollboy8 - 04-17-2008 I have gear I could donate, send me a PM with your address and I will send what I can. Also, love this idea and I will make the trip from Orem as often as I can. I am helping with Orem's DWR Youth fishing Class and, just like you said, I spend more time talking to the parents than to the kids (I try not to, but just how it goes sometimes). [signature] Re: [trollboy8] FISHING 101 PROGRAM - TubeDude - 04-17-2008 [cool][#0000ff]Thanks.[/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]You might check with some of the other folks in the DWR program to see if there is any interest in an adult version down there. If you guys can find a venue...a park with tables works fine...we can even do some in Utah County.[/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]I really think getting rookies geared up and casting well will be a big part of the program. Having some water available will help.[/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]No need to send the stuff. I am down there often enough we can work a handoff...or other members from down there come up to my place all the time.[/#0000ff] [signature] Re: [TubeDude] FISHING 101 PROGRAM - GEEZER - 04-17-2008 Pat, Throw my hat in the ring too willya? Dunno how much I can help but I'd sure be willing to "fill up my boat" whenever I'm going out. I've got some stuff I'll round up too as well as keeping some spare stuff in the boat just in case. [signature] Re: [TubeDude] FISHING 101 PROGRAM - humpy - 04-18-2008 Great Idea. I read the posts, and learn a lot from this forum. If I can help give some back I would love to help. I know more about Fly Fishing than other types. This would be a good way to meet more fishermen and learn new techniques. [signature] Re: FISHING 101 PROGRAM - phatfisher - 04-18-2008 As newbie to the forum I appreciate the concern that is being showed by the "professionals" Having fished since I was young, I am just now getting into other species besides trout from High Unita lakes and Thistle......I will do what I can to help, but would love to learn as much as I can as well...........Looking forward to the future posts.... Not that I consider myself a 100% newbie, probably 89% [signature] Re: [TubeDude] FISHING 101 PROGRAM - TubeDude - 04-23-2008 [cool][#0000ff]Hey gang, I am moving this over to the new Fishing 101 board.[/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]You cannot reply on that board, since it is one of the archive boards.[/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]If you want to volunteer or donate tackle, send me a PM and I will be sure to keep you in the loop.[/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]Thanks[/#0000ff] [signature] |
