Tail length - Dryrod - 06-19-2008

[#008000][Image: happy.gif]When tying a fly that requires a tail, I usually make it's length about equal to the shank length. Do you have a different formular?[/#008000]

[#008000]of the flies that I have tied that required tails I used the formula that you mention (equal to length of the hook shank).. but have seen.. and been sent flies (wb in particular) where the tail length was about half the length of the hook shank.. [#008000].. I have been told in the past that it is a preference of the tyer and that usually depends on the waters to be fished..[/#008000]

[#008000]..I am very curious though what others have to say on this matter.. being a novice (at everything :-) ) the more I learn the better off I will be.. :-)[/#008000]

I play it by ear, but I do start off with them HOOK SHANK length. Sometimes you feel the sudtle hits and then nothing. I am assuming they are grabbing tail and no hook, so I shorten the tail and it generally fixes the problem.
When fishing a BAIT FISH fly however, I leave the tail lone, cause they will usually attack the head of the baitfish. That is where when you feel the hit is a slow long strip them stop. Like the baitfiah runs then stops in shock. The attacker will usually go back after it .
