Portable fish finder for Saltwater - trollboy8 - 09-24-2008

To any who can help,
Each year, my wife and I make a trip to a smallish village south of Cancun, Mexico. My wife goes to relax, I go to fish. I enjoy going out with the local guides. We usually go out on 25' pangas with small outboards and, by many people's standards, fish pretty primitively. We usually troll dead baits or lures and occasionally bottom fish from a drifting boat. What I would really like to do, however, is introduce some electronics into the picture. Does anyone know of a portable fish finder--or a way to rig a "not-so-portable" fishfinder to work in the ocean at depts of no more than, say, 400 or 500 feet, usually a little shallower?
Any help would be appreciated.
Also, if anyone is looking for info on fishing the Mayan Riviera, you can check out my very amateur website at [#22229c]www.mayanrivierafishing.blogspot.com[/#22229c]
Thanks!

Hey Trollboy. Thanks for your question.

Most of your portable fishfinders will only have a maximum depth of about 300ft. The hull mounts types can range up to 700ft for small craft.

Take a look at some of the various mounting possibilities on the Float tubing board. You may be able to make up your own transom mounting attatchement with some of the ideas that we have on the tubing board.

Many of the portable setups will not allow for high speed and must be removed from the water while in transit.

Check it out and let me know if you have any other questions. You will be able to find information on mountings and especially the types of batteries required for normal operation.[cool]
