Lincoln Beach and Beyond 5/22/09 - TubeDude - 05-22-2009 [cool][#0000ff]TubeBabe and I drove almost to the land of Goshen...well, the water of Goshen anyway. Found a spot beyond the last of the No Trespassing signs and launched our tubes. Launch time about 7 AM. Water temp 64 and only slightly murky. Cleared up somewhat with calmer weather the past day or so. Actually turned green by midday.[/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]Couldn't find anything shallow. No whities, no kitties. Worked down the shoreline and found an area with some white bass in fairly shallow. Smacked about a dozen and then worked back out into deeper water to try to find something bigger. [/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]Found some feisty kitties that wanted to play, but they were clear out in 7 feet of water. TubeBabe had been sticking to shallower water and had only one small cat before I convinced her to work out into deeper water. Then she got with the program. [/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]We both got quite a few cats...from 15" to 24". We kept a few small ones for the grill and a few mid sized ones for the smoker. We each released some bigger fish. [/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]Everybody loves it when TubeBabe takes top rod honors. Well, since she got skunked on her last trip and has not been able to go fishing much the last 30 days, I cut her some slack. I let her catch one more catfish than me and her big daddy cat was an inch longer than my biggest mama cat. Yeah, TubeBabe.[/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]But, she didn't get any white bass. I also got a couple of mudcats and she didn't get any. Of course that could even be a penalty situation.[/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]Lots of black ibis flying over today. Got a couple of pics. No boat traffic and hardly any traffic on the lakeside highway. Very quite for a day before the holiday weekend.[/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]Water temp was bouncing off the underside of 70 degrees when we came in just after 1. Water was clean and green. But, the north wind was building as were the clouds. Might mess things up again.[/#0000ff] [signature] Re: [TubeDude] Lincoln Beach and Beyond 5/22/09 - lavaman - 05-23-2009 Congrats to both of you! Those are some nice chunky kitties. You fish Lincoln quite a bit, you should put a sign up over there that says: "Pat's Domain" [signature] Re: [lavaman] Lincoln Beach and Beyond 5/22/09 - TubeDude - 05-23-2009 [cool][#0000ff]Actually, we seldom fish Lincoln anymore. I do enjoy it, but there are simply too many places to dunk a dinghy...and Lincoln is sometimes overrun with the power squadron.[/#0000ff] [signature] Re: [TubeDude] Lincoln Beach and Beyond 5/22/09 - lavaman - 05-23-2009 I was checking out Porcupine and Hyrum earlier today. Strange that no power squadron was infecting either reservoir at the beginning of this holiday weekend. We're talking 'Twilight Zone' strange. [signature] Re: [lavaman] Lincoln Beach and Beyond 5/22/09 - TubeDude - 05-23-2009 [cool]Talk about Twilight Zone. Today it was as if we were the only people in the world. NOT ONE BOAT ALL DAY...in the area we were fishing. At one point we heard a boat off in the distance and remarked "Boy, the power squadron sure knows how to ruin a perfectly quiet day." I count my blessings. Too many days I have been dodging them all day and they ruined it. [signature] Re: [TubeDude] Lincoln Beach and Beyond 5/22/09 - Coldfooter - 05-23-2009 Congratulations TB! [] [signature] Re: [Coldfooter] Lincoln Beach and Beyond 5/22/09 - TubeBabe - 05-23-2009 [cool]I was concerned when it took me 'til 9:00 to catch my first fish. I was seriously considering giving up catching as my favorite pasttime ... glad the fishes eventually caught on because that would have been a very thing! [signature] Re: [Coldfooter] Lincoln Beach and Beyond 5/22/09 - TubeDude - 05-23-2009 [cool][#0000ff]Hey Don, hope ya don't mind that we launched at THE SPOT. As you remember, TB was really torqued that I caught all those kitties without her and threatened "mayhem" if I did not take her there.[/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]Well, I woke up Friday morning to the sound of a cocking pistol and the feel of a gun barrel against my head. There was TubeBabe with wild eyes and a determined look. Through clenched teeth she told me to load up the gear and take her to that kitty condo. How could I decline.[/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]Interesting though. We started in that area but did not get a bite within 100 yards of the launch spot. The water had dropped a few inches since our last trip. Neither Spanish Fork River or Benjamin Slough were running nearly as full as before and the flooded fields of the Wildlife Refuge are drying up. Looks like the peak is over...waterwise. But, the good nighttime cattin' for big ugly daddy cats is about ready to bust loose.[/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]You don't know how hard it was to fish without bait for a couple of hours so that TubeBabe could catch up and take top rod honors. Almost as tough as having a boatload of grandkids and not being able to fish yourself because you are keeping them rigged, baited and untangled.[/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]It's all good.[/#0000ff] [signature] Re: [TubeDude] Lincoln Beach and Beyond 5/22/09 - waljustia - 05-24-2009 Man, that looks like a lot of fun. Catfishing might be the most overlooked fun fishing in the state. It's nice to see such calm, flat water at Sister Utah's house, she is usually awnry when I come over.. never calm. Interesting note.. that launch spot looks eerily similar to a launch spot on the Other side of the lake.. due west. (Structure wise). I hope to bust some kitty lips soon. It's been since my trip in February that I pulled kittys out of that lake. Spring has been much busier than I imagined. Thanks for the post! [signature] Re: [waljustia] Lincoln Beach and Beyond 5/22/09 - TubeDude - 05-24-2009 [cool][#0000ff]I agree...about the catfish thing. I have been privileged to fish all over the western hemisphere and to catch just about every species of fish in the country. But, I still like playing with bluegills and I love rasslin' with big ol' kitties. There is almost something primal about doin' battle with a nasty ol' catfish. They ain't purty but they are big and tough and they don't quit easy. [/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]Some of those large ones we caught on this trip turned us around and around before crawling in the net. I had one that took me 7 times around to the left and then partially unwound me with 3 trips to the right. Of course it was a female. Couldn't make up her mind.[/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]There are several places around Utah Lake where the shoreline and conditions are similar. And, usually wherever you find a rocky shoreline ringed with reeds and brush you find whities and kitties this time of year...especially when the water levels are up high. During low water years the depth offshore is not great enough to keep them close and there is no cover to attract them for spawning.[/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]You really do need to get out more often. Hard to convey that to a family of girls though...even if some of them do like fishing. Daddy needs some tube time by himself. Not a luxury, but a necessity. [/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]I raised my three kids by myself, as a Mr. Mom, for several years. I took all the kids fishing...either together or one at a time on special "Daddy Days". But, they all knew that once in a while I needed a "brain broom" and I needed to go off by myself.[/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]Doing Starvation next Thursday. Hint hint.[/#0000ff] [signature] Re: [TubeDude] Lincoln Beach and Beyond 5/22/09 - FOD - 05-24-2009 Hope to see you out @ Starvation and get a chance to meet you. It will also be nice to have some other human powered crafts that I wont get grazed by at obnoxious speeds. Hey it also looks like our Reel Recovery group is going to be out here too the next week. Your not a "buddy" are you? [signature] Re: [TubeDude] Lincoln Beach and Beyond 5/22/09 - HFT - 05-24-2009 Interesting! that one noisey boat may have been me!! around 1:00 heading back to the south marina from Bird island. I know it only lasted 5 min. cause we were doing 60 on the glass. We hit the lake at 8 did really well for the first hour catching cats then it slowed down for a couple hours and fished well the last couple hours. the 2 of us came home with 14 nice cats threw back several. Picked up a couple white bass while a boat a hundred yards away was catching white bass left and right [signature] Re: [HFT] Lincoln Beach and Beyond 5/22/09 - TubeDude - 05-24-2009 [cool][#0000ff]Nope. The "noisy one" was running the shoreline across the lake, west of the knolls. I just knew he was going to run around the perimeter of the lake and run over us...but he din't. My anger vibes musta chased him back whence he came.[/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]Glad you guys got into some fish. That lake can be fun if you hit it right...or left.[/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]"South Marina"??? That's a long run up the freeway with an outboard. I'm guessing you meant Provo Harbor.[/#0000ff] [signature] Re: [FOD] Lincoln Beach and Beyond 5/22/09 - TubeDude - 05-24-2009 [cool][#0000ff]Shoot me a PM letting me know where you plan to be and maybe we can "hook up". I promise not to swamp you with the rooster tail from my tube.[/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]Still working on a place to start...depending on weather and other factors.[/#0000ff] [#0000ff][/#0000ff] [#0000ff]Sorry, not a part of the Reel Recovery program. A great program though.[/#0000ff] [signature] |
