Re: [zman1] ul carp - TubeDude - 01-19-2010

[cool][#0000ff]I have been around the lake since it capped but have not seen any evidence of carp harvesting through the ice.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I will make some contacts and see if I can get any info on projected seining activities.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I posted a link a while back on a Utube video put up by the June Sucker program. It contains some shots of the winter carping operation.[/#0000ff]

Re: [zman1] ul carp - TubeDude - 01-19-2010

[cool][#0000ff]I got back a couple of replies to my request for info on the winter carp seining. First one is from Reed Harris, who spearheads the June Sucker Recovery Program:[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
hi Pat...Bill has been seining under the ice, mostly in Goshen Bay...he moved out toward the Provo airport but the ice hasn't been the best (rough underside) for seining...many officials have asked to go out and see the operation and we have been trying to get a time and date when everyone could go out and see the crew operate...I am sure it will happen soon if ice holds up...we are about ready to transition from our 1 million pound contract to our big 5 million pound contract here in January...keeping up with Bill is not an easy task so we rely a lot on Jackie Watson of DWR who keeps in close touch as they monitor by-catch...I will inform you of the day or days when we might get to take a look at the operation once I hear from Bill or Jackie...
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]Second one is from Jackie Watson, a biologist on the June Sucker Program:[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
Hello all,
Just got off the phone with Bill a few minutes ago. We're in a holding pattern due to weather. Pat, I'll add your name to my list of people to contact for a day out on the ice. Looks like we might have to wait until next week, depending on weather. Thanks for your interest!
Jackie

Re: [TubeDude] ul carp - Therapist - 01-19-2010

Goshen Ocean has been the place of choice to seine under the ice. They have depth ( up to 8 ft), good ice, and the carplets enjoy congregating out there.

Today's weather, rain, will not help the situation, but my guess is that they have 8-12 inches out there. They usually park the big trucks as you go around West Mt. from Lincoln beach.

[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
[#0000ff]I will post a notice when I get official information on when the public might have access to the carp seining area.[/#0000ff]

Re: [zman1] ul carp - TubeDude - 01-21-2010

[cool][#0000ff]Just got this from Reed Harris. Looks like Sunday they will be making holes in the ice and fishing Monday.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
I talked to Bill this morning and he is waiting for the weather to break...he has pretty good ice in Goshen Bay and is planning to cut holes on Sunday and fish them on Monday...Normally the nets go in about 9:00 am and the haul starts about noon...that's the plan for now...I know Goshen Bay is a pretty big area. Bill said his trucks and equipment should be visible from the road that goes around Lincoln Point...Bill said he often has interactions with the public and that is no problem but the edges of the ice near shore can become soft so be careful...

Re: [TubeDude] ul carp - TubeDude - 01-21-2010

[cool][#0000ff]Also got this from Jackie Watson, the DWR biologist.[/#0000ff]
[#0000ff][/#0000ff]
If fishing does occur on Monday I'm planning on being out there. If anyone wanted to meet at my office here in Springville (1115 N Main St, Springville) they could follow me out to the site. I'll be leaving the office around 9am. Additionally, if someone were to come out later they could call my cell phone 801-616-6002 and I'd be happy to meet them on the main road. Once you know where he's fishing it seems easy to find, but several of our biologists have had difficulty in the past.
