How to know what type of motor? - BADFISH - 03-03-2010 So I was reading through my previous post about oil ratios and for motors that are water cooled you use the TCW-3 type oil. Air cooled you can use the stuff you put in your weed whacker regular 2-stroke oil. My question is this: How can you tell if you have a "water cooled" or "Air cooled" type of motor. I ask because I have a 1949 champion 7.5 that I think is air cooled but I accquired a 1983 Sears "Ted Williams" Gamefisher 9.9 that I have NO idea as I have not had it out on the water yet have just been Tuning it up to make it smooth running. The second question: Does it hurt to run the TCW-3 oil in an air cooled motor just to be on the safe side? It would have a lower combustion limit based on the other info I read in some of the postings, so being that would it create less buildup of carbon and such in any 2-stroke engine? Those older motors were not fussy with oil types. The newest motors howerver, are fussy. Merc's should only use the Merc oil, synthetics should stay with synthetics, etc. I have a friend who runs the TCW-3 Walmart oil in his 2001 Polaris snowmobile and it works fine. This is an oil injected machine. Costs a whole lot less than the Polaris oil. However, don't substitute regular oil for synthetic. You can go the other way though......synthetic for regular oil [signature] Re: [BADFISH] How to know what type of motor? - wiperhunter2 - 03-03-2010 BLFG isn't kidding about those older motors not being fussy with oil types. I have an old air cooled motor, I can still read the mixing directions on the front, it say to use 30 wt. regular motor oil. As far as the difference between air and water cooled engines, the biggest difference is there is no pee hole[blush] on air cooled engines. I was thinking if it is water cooled i would want to check out my impellar(??) before i get out there and have a over heating issue. Is it those parts that pump/push water up through the unit? [#ff0000]Unless you have a barrel that you can start your motor in, I'm not sure if there is another way to tell. If no one else has a idea how to tell you could always give Lee's marina a call.[/#ff0000] before i get out there and have a over heating issue. Also, if there is a water intake then there must be a place for the water to go(pee). If no intake then, no pee. I have a 25 hp that the muffs work great on. Thats how I do my spring "first start". Well worth the five bucks mentioned earlier.[] [signature] |
