April Showers Bring......Nightcrawlers! - perchinski - 04-21-2011

Been limiting out this week. Dark bite. Dozens for the taking, and free of charge. Keep 'em in the right bedding in a 40-degree fridge and they'll last a long time. Heading down to Bullfrog this wkend for club's annual spring tourney. Hope to lose some to walleye.

Yank 'em while it's cool & wet. Once the warm weather arrives, they're a tough get.

What do you consider the "Right Bedding"???? I'm all about the cool temp and have tried many different home concoctions along with the store bought varieties but all I end up with is rotten stink bait. How often do you change the bedding??? Just curious. [crazy]

I buy bedding every from that guy who runs a huge worm shop on 2200 W behind SLCC. It's basically newspaper mulch. I store 3-4 doz in those inexpensive tins you'd bake a meatloaf in, and keep 'em in the garage fridge, right around 40 degrees. I yanked 34 doz in two hrs over two nights this past week. Sounds like a lot, but you can go thru a bunch in a wkend of walleye fishing. In fact, I'm taking a load to Powell w/me this wkend. I'm in a great worm-friendly neighborhood, plus there's a farmer's field at the end of our circle. Lots easier pulling them out of soil as compared to grass.

I basically use the same stuff but I think I had it too wet the last time. [shocked]

I hope to perfect my method someday before I die. [:/]

Thanks for the info and Good Fishing! [fishin]

Do you use any type of "stimulation" to get the worms up? My grandpa used to have a shocker that we used.

That worm guy is Verlo Ottley. His garage is completley full of worm beds and he also sells worms in a automated dispenser at his backdoor. Nice worms. His address is 4300 South and 2700 West

Good to know. Walmart worms are 1/2 dead. Thanks for the new source.

...or entirely dead.

I was at the Orem Walmart on Wednesday and overheard a stressful conversation with two employees in the sporting goods department. Apparently, they had the worm fridge too cold, and all the worms froze. The one guy thought they would be fine when they thawed out. Luckily, the other worker talked some sense into him before I had to explain the facts of life, death, and rotten worms...

So if you were planning on getting worms from that Walmart this weekend, be sure to make other plans. They seemed very concerned about not having any worms for Saturday.

I used to do the same. It sure was effective and I'd like to be able to do it again! But I asked an electrician about that and he told me of the dangers if it was done on wet lawn and no rubber boots...[:/]
