Cascade, Thursday, March 15. - iwantabuggy - 03-16-2012

Went to Cascade today inspite of the forcasted "showers". Well, it rained more than it didn't. When I arrived there was about 1-1.5 inches of standing water on the ice. When I left there was around 3 inches of standing water.

When I drilled a hole the water started running in like a flushed toilet.
See video: [url "http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hs1PwCCRuLE"]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hs1PwCCRuLE[/url]

I have a 7 inch auger. After ~ 5hours of water flushing down the hole the holes were pushing 10 inches in diameter. The ice was ~28 inches thick but after 5 hours of water flushing down the hole in etched out a large cavity between layers of ice. I stuck my slush spoon down the hole and it appeared that there was about 8 inches of ice, about 12 inches of void/water, and then more ice. From what I could tell, the blue ice under all the white ice appears to be gone. I don't expect Cascade to be fishable much longer.

If you decide to go, be careful. I won't be going again until next winter.

BTW, I brought home about 15-17 keepers and flushed back a 12-14 inch trout and several perch under 12 inches. Found the active fish in about 15-17 FOW. I believe they are going to be spawning very soon.

[laugh] That's pretty funny. I had the toilet-flush thing happen to me earlier this year at Winchester. It was pretty freaky. I didn't try to fish through the whirlpool, I just moved on, I'm impressed you were able to fish through it.
Thanks for the report!

That's cool as long as you don't drop anything you want to keep. You should have drilled a circle of holes around you to drain the water.
ok many not[bobsurprised]

Not a bad idea. I never thought of that. I doubt it would have done much good, though, there was so much water and the level just kept coming up.

How about a hole-sized bucket with the bottom cut out, shoved into the hole?

It is kinda strange, having to keep water out of your fishing spot.

That video is surreal.

Wow, that is unreal. Next time you should take another shanty and set up your own outhouse - you could charge people a few bucks to use it but really make some moola by selling them "mountain money" at $5 a sheet.

I'm glad you are safe.

Okay, so I said I was done, but now I'm thinking about trying one more time. Anyone have an update? Please?[Smile]

Supposed to get up into the 70s this weekend here in Boise. Face it, ice fishing season is over.

Personally, I wouldn't risk it.

The guy at Tackles Tom's told me people often ice fish into mid-May. I was really hoping for a report from someone who'd been out. I know 2 ATV's went clear out to the island and back on Sunday. I suspect it is still very fishable, but I'd prefer an eyewitness report. Just as the ice doesn't form over night, it doesn't disappear over night either......
