Newbie Help! - ralphie126 - 07-03-2012 Hey guys, I am new to the fourm, and fairly new to fishing. I am taking a cruise to the islands and i am planning to do some surf fishing. So I need a 2 piece rod and a reel for about 20 pound test. I have 100$ cabellas cards and I need about 2 rod/reels. It does not have to be a combo but this is what i found. Should I get this, http://www.cabelas.com/product/Fishing/Saltwater-Fishing/Saltwater-Rod-Reel-Combos/Surf%7C/pc/104793480/c/104765580/sc/104536980/i/104119380/Cabelas-Salt-Strikerreg-SurfWhuppin-Stickreg-Salt-Surf-Spinning-Combo/1171647.uts?destination=%2Fcatalog%2Fbrowse%2Ffishing-saltwater-fishing-saltwater-rod-reel-combos-surf%2F_%2FN-1100479%2FNs-MIN_SALE_PRICE%3FWTz_l%3DSBC%253BMM%253Bcat104765580%253Bcat104536980%26WTz_stype%3DGNU&WTz_l=SBC%3BMM%3Bcat104765580%3Bcat104536980%3Bcat104119380 or this reel, http://www.cabelas.com/product/Fishing/Saltwater-Fishing/Saltwater-Reels/Spinning%7C/pc/104793480/c/104765580/sc/104527980/i/103980780/Daiwa-Emcast-Sport-Surf-Spinning-Reel/739209.uts?destination=%2Fcatalog%2Fbrowse%2Ffishing-saltwater-fishing-saltwater-reels-spinning%2F_%2FN-1100473%2FNs-CATEGORY_SEQ_103980780%3FWTz_l%3DSBC%253BMMcat104793480%253Bcat104765580%253Bcat104527980 and this rod, http://www.dickssportinggoods.com/product/index.jsp?productId=12174216&cp=4406646.4413993.4414792.4414795.4414817 I have 100 dollars to cabelas and 50 to dicks. So I plan to buy 2 rods and reels in either way then buy tackle seprate. It would be a great cat fishing rig too. I use Okuma Avenger ABF 40 with 14lb mono on a 9' ugly stick for guiding cat fishing trips on the shores of Lake Champlain here in Vermont. Okuma has a great drag system and the bait feed alarm works well for live baiting. I have a couple Avenger ABF 50 with 17lb mono on 9' ugly sticks that I use for personal vacation striper and blue fish fishing. I am happy with the performance, but I wouldn't bring my gear off shore, its just not strong enough. Good luck fishing! [signature] Re: [albinotrout] Newbie Help! - tubeN2 - 10-29-2015 That post is about 3 yrs old. lol The reel looks good for surf fishing but the rod is only about half the length needed for most surf fishing. A 10 to 12 rod is optimal in order to cast out past the wave breaks on the Pacific coast. The southern states only require a 9 foot rod and the East coast requires a 16 foot surf rod. Every area is different depending upon what type of tide and current is in the area. But with my wife's insistence that I take her to a beach I may have to take that route one of these days.[crazy] [signature] Re: [albinotrout] Newbie Help! - tubeN2 - 10-29-2015 Old or new, I have noticed in the past that the answer to ones question on a forum can actually help others out there that couldn't get up the nerve to ask or maybe thought that their question was too stupid. I usually tell people that the stupidest question is the on that DIDN"T get asked. We are all here to learn from each other.
