TUNA'S ARE BITEING - ladypamela2 - 07-14-2012

July 6, 2012

The fourth of July has been explosive, as we had a great Bimini, Bahamas charter with Dirk, and friends Kirk, Kelly, Mike, Stacy and Jackie. Dirk flew straight in from Washington, D.C., using his diplomatic credentials to hold the plane so he could make the flight. Once they landed in Fort Lauderdale, he got a cab straight to the boat, and we were off to Bimini for some yellowfin tuna fishing.

Before the trip I had loaded the boat with live pilchards and plenty of frozen chum, so we were ready to go. Our target fishing area was the deep canyons south of Lucaya, Grand Bahama. It’s about a 50 mile one-way run, but it was only about a 1.5 hour trip in the 36’ Invincible, powered with triple Mercury Verado outboards.

Within 15 minutes of getting into the canyon we found birds crashing bait and started chumming with dead sardines. The yellowfins were all over the dead sardine chum and wasted no time attacking the live pilchards we had put out on flat lines. We were using Shimano Tiagra 50’s loaded with 80lb Sufix line. The first fish was Dirk’s, and a 60 lb’er inhaled his bait and took off in a flash. This fish was feisty, and even Dirk, at 6’-5” and 300+ lbs was impressed with the battle. We got the fish into the boat and it was back to the tuna school for more action. The group landed two more fish, one at 60 lbs, and a monster 110 lb’er that Kirk landed. It was awesome fishing, and the fresh tuna sashimi, and grilled tuna were absolutely spectacular. Even better, we have three more days of fishing!
