Cabo San Lucas Weekly Fish Report and Baja Fishing - jcsportfishing - 07-17-2012

As the Admiral Seas It
Fishing Report: 7/9/12 to 7/16/12

. Jc Sportfishing Charters is a family owned and operated business and has been fishing in Cabo San Lucas for the past 18 years. Jerry, explains that his charter business is geared more for families and novice anglers, making sure everyone who charters a boat with him has a great time and lots of fun. We welcome families and groups. We want everyone who fishes with us to take all the sites in and have memorable experience. This is what is most important to us. We have and do a few tournaments each year and can accommodate fisherman who might be interested in tournament fishing. Lets get on with the report for this past week.
WATER: Well water temps are really getting up there, with temperatures in the 80,s throughout much of the fishing grounds. There were even patches of 80 degree water on the pacific side around Jamie Banks. Right out in front of the arch temperatures were 79 to 84 and since the 10th of July water in our fishing grounds have been a consistant 79 to 84 degrees, except for a few patches of green water. We aren’t seeing much of the green water and seems like it is almost gone. That’s good news.
.WEATHER: July weather has set in and you know what that means. We have had some really hot days and you can really feel the intense heat. Seems like 4th of July was the turning point. This past week was more of the same weather hot and some windy days . That cool wind at night that we had been experiencing has ended and now the breeze is mostly a warm one. Today was mostly overcast and looking like rain part of the day but it never materialized. Hot is the word to describe weather now.
BAIT: Caballito are in abundance this week with some Mackerel. The bait is at the standard 3$ a piece. Some frozen Ballyhoo have been found on the bait boats. Try and find fresh frozen and not refrozen.
FISHING: I think that the full moon which started off our week was good for the fishing. Wow what a change a few days have made with fishing being kicked into high gear this past week. It’s the time of year for Blue Marlin and I heard one was caught on the pacific side 4 miles off the pump station, weighing in at 260 pounds. This is good news as we expect the marlin fishing to get crazy this coming week. Even inshore we have been picking up Stripped Marlin and Sailfish on live bait and Cabailltos. Pangas have reported catching Marlin and Sailfish from the Arch to the pump house 2 to 4 miles off shore on live bait. The most productive areas for Stripped Marlin has been the area of the1150 and 95. Gordo Banks area had reported Blue Marlin also. The Sailfish have been in abundance all over the place.
TUNA: Seems as if the Tuna are here in numbers. We did get into the Tuna and what a difference a week makes. Blind Strikes by Tuna out at the 95 and the horseshoe area was good with Tuna being reported caught as far north as the Jamie Banks. Fish were being caught on cedar plug feathers. We have been dragging spreader bars with ballyhoo and squid running cedar plugs behind the bars. This has really triggered the fish into biteing. Some of the fish have been in the 40 to 50 pound range. Dropping live bait as soon as a fish is hooked up has also produced some larger tuna. Tuna are showing up in Dolphin schools 7 to 20 miles out.
DORADO: The Dorado have certainly arrived . We are seeing lots of schools of small Dorado. They seem to not want to bite easily. There have been some bigger Dorado being caught 35 to 50 pounds, but not a lot. Look for birds diving or anything floating in the water.
WAHOO: Wahoo is practically non existent this past week.
INSHORE: Inshore action was pretty slow with a few Rooster fish here and there. Not to many Snappers to brag about either. Some Grouper have been caught, at Gray rock bottom fishing. Sierra bite was ok but not like previous weeks. Today we did catch some nice African Pompano, and yes we do have Pompano here and there is several species of Pompano. They were caught off of Rancho Migrano on the pacific side using live bait.
BEWARE: Remember if your not renting charter boats from companies who have been established in Cabo for the past 20 years ( Jcsportfishing, Pisces Sportfishing, Minervas, Redrum, Picante Fleet) you might have problems. There are many sportfishing fleets on the internet who are really not established business, who are operating illegally. Lots of these outfits are renting you a boat they have never even looked at and don’t even know where you would board the boat, leaving you the task of trying to find the boat. They don’t even have an office you can go and confirm your charter boat. You do not want to spend a day walking around looking for the boat and where you board. If you wait till the day you are fishing and go to the dock where your boat is many times people will mislead you to another boat or dock trying to put you on a boat that was not meant for you. You need to have a person guide you to your boat, who is from a reputable charter company. This way there is no confusion or misleading. Lots of vendors renting boats in the hotels are not reputable and don’t care about your interest and care more about a commission . 75% of the Cabo Fishing websites on Google are not even in business anymore or might be just brokers who don’t have an office in Cabo. Some of the Google websites are misleading and not established .Please remember when renting Sport fishing boats in Cabo that you rent your boat from reputable and established business. Walk into a fishing fleet office and ask questions about what you are getting and what are the costs. You dont want to rent boats from vendors in the streets and you do not want to book through shady websites offering you the world. You need to go to the fishing fleet office, while in Cabo and book your boat. Check through travel forums about reputable fishing fleets to deal with. Look for testimonials about the fleet your booking your charter with. Ask about what will the boat be supplying? Will it include beverages or lunches? How much does it cost to fillet your catch? Check to see if charter boat is insured? Ask about getting your catch smoked? Check cost of fishing license. These are just a few things to consider when booking your charter boat. We will be talking more about this in next weeks fishing report. Until next time good fishing and we hope to see you in Cabo soon.
