Abu Garcia vs Others - coltergeist99 - 04-09-2014

Hello everyone,
Been a while since I've been on, hope everyone is doing well. I'm looking at some new spinning rods for this season. I was curious what anyone's impression may be of Abu Garcia rods. I have fished with Fenwick and Ugly Stik mostly in the past and love my Fenwick rod especially. All opinions welcome and thank you in advance.

shimano all the way for me especially on spinning reels and rods abu makes some good rod and reels too but shimano makes the best as for rods i do like st croix but i think action and what your using it for matters more than the brand also once you have found a rod you like find the reviews on it and see what others are saying im hard on gear and shimano's just last the longest for me

It really depends on what you are using the rod for. Sturgeon rods versus bluegill rods. What are you looking for?

I can't really compare Abu to other "higher end" equipment, but I do love my Abu Garcia poles.
I used to just buy the cheap combos but I got tired of them crapping out, so last year I ponied up for a good setup.
I bought Abu Garcia's "Villain" spinning rod, 7ft medium, and paired it with their Cardinal STX30 reel. LOVED IT!
It's crazy sensitive, light, and very well balanced.
This year I just bought a "Veracity" rod, also 7ft medium, and paired it with their Cardinal STX40 reel. I've only hooked one trout so far on the new pole, but it feels a tad stiffer, and the Cardinal STX40 doesn't feel quite as smooth as the 30 (imo)

I fish primarily for trout, and the Villain was very fun to use with trout of any size- I was catching everything from planters to 18-19"-ers all last summer with it. Hooked a few bass on it too.

Until they piss me off somehow, I'm going to stick to their gear, most likely, from now on.

The Cardinal STX reels run about $50, and (iirc) I paid about $80 each for the rods.(Sale prices)

A friend has their Veritas casting rod with micro guides (I don't know what reel), and loves it.

I just recently purchased the Abu Garcia Revo Premier Spinning reel and love it. Anyway......
I also bought a Scheels brand 6-'6" medium light fast action spinning rod for $99.00. Very nice rod. If any of Scheels brand rods break or fail for ANY reason, you take it back and they hand you a new rod. Period.

I agree with Oskolkoff on the spinning reels, I use nothing but the Shimano Sienna's now and can't see myself changing. Thanks for the input everyone. Just never know about the reviews on the sites that sell the rods so I wanted to real feedback. Maybe I should just pony up and buy a GLoomis to get the warranty? Hard to spend that much on one rod for me.

I do think I'll buy an Abu Garcia and give it a try. I'm not out much if I don't care for it.

I've been really impressed with Denali rods. They weigh next to nothing and are very well crafted. I have a few Shimanos as well and think they're pretty great too.

Denali and St. Croix, made in USA (well, the St. Croix premier and mojo series are actually made in Mexico but still a USA company). But as has been said, really need to understand what your target species and type of lures/bait are to give any really good recommendations. My shimano rods have been great as well, although not as impressed with shimano reels lately (or their customer service).

Mostly targeting trout. As the summer moves on I start fishing for catfish, but they don't get very big down this way.

Tried most all the popular brands. Won lamiglas at a raffle and got a dobyns for my bday, then I got a Lews speedsick for Christmas. The Lews is by far the best rod I've ever used. I do like my coalition weapon. I agree that shimono sux. Pflueger is my reel of choice, but I'm poor. Penn and ugly stik for sturgeon.

To echo Mojo.....it all depends on what you are targeting and methods you are using.

Trolling for trout = 7'6" to 8' bait casting rod rated for 8-17 lbs test with medium power is my fav. Shimano, Cabelas, Ugly Stick, etc all provide nice rods in this catagory.

Bank fishing or casting = Spin casting rods with same rating..same brands ....For a less expensive but nice feel I also like the Berkly's

Loomis is a top line for sure,,,,,but certainly will not required if rather not spedn the money
