Does DEET harm PVC? - StacyR - 06-25-2014 My 'toon has a PVC shell. Now that the mosquitoes are out in force, I was wondering if I need to be careful about where I apply bug spray around the pontoon. I know DEET can harm some plastics, but I'm not sure about PVC specifically. Do I need to worry about overspray or spots where my arms and legs rub against the material after I've applied it? Yes, I know there are DEET-free repellents, but I hate ones that are greasy and the only one I've found that doesn't leave me all sticky uses DEET. Better that than bites...and maybe some of the bug-borne illnesses.[/#0000FF] [signature] Re: [StacyR] Does DEET harm PVC? - flygoddess - 06-25-2014 Not all plastic is created equal. Deet will eat certain types. It will eat the PVC coating on fly line. It ate through a plastic drink bottle. read this: http://npic.orst.edu/factsheets/DEETtech.pdf I say use with care. I agree with the part about DEET being better than bug bites and getting sick, though. I hate those bloodsuckers. I have a hard time spraying something one me that can eat plastic or rubber. It does work though. Note: Bounce dryer sheet pinned to your shirt (underneath) works pretty good. Not at toxic as Deet. http://www.amazon.com/Sawyer-Premium-Repellent-Picaridin-4-Ounce/dp/B0015KG5NK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1403802427&sr=8-1&keywords=picaridin+insect+repellent [signature] Re: [cpierce] Does DEET harm PVC? - flygoddess - 06-26-2014 Thanks C.
