SF Clearwater- what fish now? - nijimasu - 07-23-2014

Hi guys. My band will be playing at the RiverClan Saloon near Stites this weekend, and I'm wondering what I can legally fish for in the river, or any adjoining places? Are there trout in there, or will I get in trouble fishing because Salmon is closed?

Anybody in the area, you're of course invited to stop by Friday or Saturday pm. Looks like it will be a lot of fun.

Cutthroats live in there, and can be taken on a fly or small spinner...

West slope cuts but they are few and far between on the lower river. You have to get up pretty far to find a bunch of them. If it were me I would drive up the lochsa. It's a blue ribbon cut throat fishery.

This is a little off topic, but didn't you get your tires slashed up on the SF this spring? Spending time at the River Clan Saloon might set you up for the same again. The owner of that place is probably the most hated guy in the entire valley.

Wow, glad I'm not taking my rig this time. Work is work. Hopefully since one of the guys in the band is from that neck of the woods, and the other has an amiable ex-wife in the valley, we'll be forgiven our foreignness this time.. Pm me if you like, but fill me in on that whole hate bit, why there's hate for the saloon owner, etc.

I figured the only reason I got my tire cut before is because I had a nice rig (wife's vehicle) with Ada county plates parked where a local thought he owned the hole.

Still don't understand the chickenshite mentality of slashing a tire on an out of town vehicle, though. I'm not that scary a dude to just come yell at face to face.

Don't know about the concern of hate... The place was loaded with nice, nice people when we played, both locals and out-of-towners who had come in after hearing radio ads. The only heckler was some Stites local who was mad because we wouldn't play sweet home Alabama, and the only person upset with the bar was a guy who got mad when he was cut off alcohol. He apparently was also sneaking beers to under age kids, and when that didn't work, he gave them Pabst cans to hold and told them to pretend like they'd been previously carded. Too bad the place didn't serve Pabst! I can see why he might hold a grudge against the place though, since he didn't want to play by the rules and they made him.

The people running the place-all of them- treated the band extremely well, and more professionally than many of the bars here in the big city. I'd play there again in a heartbeat. Don't get many gigs with white tails feeding in the yard behind you while you play.

Fishing was slow, but myself and the harmonica player got a few trout on hoppers on the lochsa, but I spent most of my time teaching the singer's boy how to fish a spinner right at the saloon. He finally got the hang of it and got a squaw-pike-minnow-fish or whatever they're called these days that nearly yanked his arm off when it hit, and a nice trout that the folks at the saloon showed him how to clean and cooked him for his breakfast. Judging by the look on his face, he may have had a good time. Sure is pretty up there.
