Swan - hooknhunter - 10-13-2014 Went down to Swan on Saturday afternoon. While I was getting ready I decided to throw in my favorite ice fishing rod (just in case I wanted to give it a try). While trying to get that out of my bag of rods I set down my 2 bass fishing rods and then never picked them up again. I didn't discover it until I was already down at the res. So the only rod I had with me was a Cajun ice 26 inch UL with 5 # fluorocarbon ice fishing line. I tried vertically fishing some of my normal lures for this rod but only picked up 1 small bass. Finally after a quite a while of fishing with no luck I decided to put on a 1/4 oz jig head and a 3 inch curly tail. It wasn't long until I was catching some bass in the 10-12 inch range. The bass weren't much for size so I went searching for larger fish. It took me a long time but I finally figured out where they were and how to get them to bite. Unfortunately, the tiny UL rod didn't have enough backbone for a decent hook set. I did bring 1 fish that would have gone 4-5 lbs up to the boat before it came off and had several other large fish on, but just couldn't get the hook to penetrate their hard mouth with the tiny UL rod. At one point I thought I had a snag and started up the motor to reposition the boat so I could get it off the bottom when the fish started to move and I realized that it was not a snag. Even with the motor going and trying to follow this fish it nearly spooled me at one point, and then it came off. I'm guessing that it may have been a carp or sturgeon that I accidentally snagged, but I'm not sure cause I never saw the fish. It was a fun time catching bass on that tiny rod, but I sure wished I'd had my normal bass rods cause I hooked into some very nice fish and it would have been nice to get a good hook set. Still, a great afternoon. Did ok. nothing big. but its always fun to fight smallies on a 5 weight. Keep hoping the moss will GO AWAY ! but a good afternoon all in all. I thought they might be mostly done by now, but there still there. Just not as bad as they were earlier. Probably will be fading away as the season changes? I hope. [signature] |
