Dec 2003

COMINS LAKE

The lake is covered with ice and now is the time of year for ice fishing, according to Chris Crookshanks, NDOW fisheries biologist. Jigs tipped with nightcrawler worms are the preferred method for catching rainbow trout that can weigh three pounds or more.

A storm that arrived on Christmas deposited 18 inches of snow at the lake, which is located seven miles south of Ely along U.S. 93. Temperatures have ranged from minus 12 degrees to highs in the low 20s. Winds and cold weather have made for unpleasant fishing conditions.

EAGLE VALLEY RESERVOIR

Peter Gill of the Nevada Division of State Parks said that ice fishing has been fairly good for rainbow trout with anglers concentrating their efforts around the fishing dock. The lake is covered with a layer of ice that ranges from three to seven inches in depth.

Ice conditions may be unsafe away from the fishing dock, so anglers should confine their fishing to that portion of the lake. Temperatures have been ranging from well below zero at night to the low to mid 30s during the day.
The lake is located in Spring Valley State Park east of Pioche.

ECHO CANYON RESERVOIR

The lake is covered with ice and no anglers have been seen fishing during the past week.

LAKE MEAD

Boaters are still finding fairly good action for striped bass in Las Vegas Bay while shore fishing is continuing to decline in the Boulder Basin, according to the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW).

Threadfin shad, the main food fish for stripers, are still being seen in large numbers in Las Vegas Bay and the game fish are nearby. Boaters are trolling with Sassy Shad lures and fishing deep with live shad and anchovies to catch the fish.

NDOW creel clerks said they have checked a number of large stripers in recent weeks with the largest weighing 23 pounds. Stripers ranging from six to 17 pounds have been appearing regularly in the catch.

A few stripers weighing from two to three pounds have been taken recently from shore at Pumphouse Cove by anglers who are casting large plugs. Hemenway Cove has also produced some stripers recently for anglers who have been fishing with anchovies.

The next rainbow trout plants are scheduled to take place on Saturday (1/3/04) at Hemenway, Horsepower, North Saddle and Pumphouse coves.

LAKE MOHAVE

Several large striped bass were caught following last weekend’s rainbow trout plant at Cottonwood Cove. NDOW creel clerks checked stripers that weighed 23 and 18 pounds Saturday (12/27/03) that were caught by boaters outside of the marina with large lures that imitate rainbow trout.

Also on Saturday, a pair of boaters caught 60 stripers a mile south of Cottonwood that ranged from 12 to 18 inches. The fish were caught with anchovies.

A 25-pound striper was caught Saturday at Willow Beach following the trout plant in that part of the lake.

The next trout stocking at Willow Beach is scheduled for Saturday, Jan 3. Cottonwood Cove as well as Willow Beach, Aztec Wash and Placer Cove will be planted on Friday, Jan. 9.

WAYNE E. KIRCH WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA

Even though temperatures have been extremely cold, approximately half of the water on the lakes is free of ice. Conditions are unsafe for ice fishing. NDOW believes that strong winds on the area have prevented the lakes from becoming completely frozen.

URBAN PONDS

Ponds at Lorenzi Park, Floyd Lamb State Park and Sunset Park in Las Vegas and Veterans Memorial Park in Boulder City will be stocked with rainbow trout on Saturday (1/3/04).
