Henry's Thanksgiving Day - Tazasorus - 11-28-2014

Got to Henry's half an hour before light. Feet were wet ten minutes later. Would suggest at least five inches of waterproof boots, gets really bad in the afternoon. Edges by hatchery had lots of standing water. The two of us iced 40 fish, all cutthroats, no brookies. The leeches were constant winners all day long, lots of short bites though. Here are the two I kept. One was at 21 inches, 4lbs 1oz. The other was 20.5 and 3lbs 14oz. Here are a few pictures. Got to meet Damon from the hatchery. Came out within thirty yards of where I was fishing, shut down his snow machine and walked over so as not to disturb. I liked the guy from the get go. Got to visit with for about 15 minutes before he moved on. Now I know why you guys speak so highly of him

Where I was at I would say at least a foot of snow plus the slop under it.

That sounds like work . I useuly use my 4 wheeler to pull out my gear . That sounds like to much snow for it .

My scoop said seven inches of good ice the problem is getting on first and then all the slop once your on. We saw one guy getting off that the ice broke on the edge and went in up to his crotch.

We made it up to the staley springs side yesterday, it was no problem getting on and off the ice. there was a ton of slush on the ice as the day went. fished on 7 inches of good ice. Fishing was kinda slow but the average fish was 16-17inches. Way better than sitting at home!

There's 3-4" of water on top of the ice in most areas where people have been fishing, and the edges at the hatchery are getting broken up a bit. I really think the cold snap will sort it out. Water clarity is better on the north but still not the clear, see-to-the-bottom, that is normally is. I'd say it has about a 3' visibility. I can't figure out the reason for the murkiness. I think it is affecting the fishing though. Was up there before the sun came up, which is normally killer for ice fishing, but things didn't pick up for us until about 9 when things were decently bright outside. I just think the fish are having to work a bit harder to find the bait, and the extra light outside makes it easier. Anyone know the reason for the murk? Did the temps change so rapidly that the lake is still trying to catch up and turn over?

We were at the mouth of the outlet today with 5 kids running around and that definitely affected the fishing in 11 fow. Jigging was by far the method with white some pink and red. Went off by myself where I like to fish and in a shallow area and had two landed and two lost in less than ten min. The temp at 11 feet was 34.7 . When drilling some holes in ice that was piled up in the wind and refrozen it was dirtier than any thing I have drilled. I wonder if the lower ice is melting and dropping the dirt and lake debris as the top keeps freezing. 8-11 inches of ice and a foot of snow and weary windy at sunset.

Just checked the traffic camera at the State Park . 35 mph wind , gusts to 40 mph .

Saturday was the worst, windiest day of ice fishing I've ever been through. Even though it was 40 degrees, it felt like below zero and on top of that fishing was dreadfully slow. We went over to Island Park and hunkered by the ledges by the spillway and managed only one small rainbow. Friday afternoon and Sunday morning were pretty good to us at Henry's though. A couple decent hybrids, 5 or 6 good brook trout, and a couple dozen of those boring yellowstones.
