Montpelier Ice Fishing Report - OvidCreek - 11-30-2014

My son and I iced fished Montpelier by the dam this past Saturday. The reservoir is 2/3 capped and ice by the dam was 4'', it was easy to get on the ice. I did not dare go for my normal spot and if you even fish by the dam be careful if you see a small spider like hole the ice, in these locations are two layers about 1-2'' inches thick each with a water layer in between the two layers. It is not the time to take little kids if they are not focused and stay near the area you are fishing. The actual fishing was pretty good. We fished from 1:30 till 5:00 PM icing and releasing 31 fish (30 bows/ 1 cutt) and believe it or not, not one perch! All fish ranged from 11-13'' , best action was from 2:00 till 3:00 PM, and it was on fire from 4:30-4:45 while actively micro jigging. Most fish were caught on a small pink kokanee style jig with a piece of crawler and a morsel of rainbow Powerbait. The fish only seem to be in 20' of water, tried 5,10, and 15 foot marks nothing?

Best,

Nope--I certainly looked at the Vex for them, but none appeared. All the kokes I have ever caught at Montpelier came in a mixed bag of trout and perch. They were occasional and few and far between. It is the same story with Devil Creek minus the perch. I always hope to get one there though it really makes you think you are a fisherman when you can catch a koke at Montpelier.

Best,

My son and a friend of his, that lives in that area, caught limits of kokes there two years ago, but it was in the middle of January.

Last year I ran into a bunch ok kokes. I think it was just luck finding them on the vex above the cloud of rainbows.

In smaller lakes the kokes are almost always small, with the bigger ones topping out at 12 to 13 inches but it is not uncommon to catch kokes as small as 7 to 9 inches in lakes where they reproduce naturally. Do you know if the kokes in Montpelier reproduce naturally or are they stocked?
