Carp fly patterns - mudsucker - 04-04-2015

My son took a fly tying class and now he wants to catch a carp if we make it down to the banana belt this summer where carp live. What are some good patterns for him to try tying?

Here is a link to quite a few proven patterns. http://www.flycarpin.com/p/flies-for-carp.html
Honestly though, we often do just fine with black wooly buggers/leeches (I prefer a size 8) in varying weights, smaller crawfish patterns, and red san juan worms. One of those three usually does the trick. In the end I think it's more about the technique/presentation than the fly, but getting both spot on never hurts.
