Ambassadeur XLT 1 magnetic brake question. - harryhh - 07-08-2016

Hello folks,

I have a Abu Garcia AmbasSadeur XLT 1 bait casting with a magnetic brake dial on the left side of the reel.

If there ever was one, there is no +/- or More/Less indication around the dial. There is a small arrow on the dial itself.

Does anyone know for sure which way to turn the dial for more and less braking?

Thanks,
Harry

I just did a quick search for your reel on Google and found the Abu Garcia website has manuals for their reels; you might check there.

Hello lskiles,

First, I should add that my reel is AmbasSadeur XLT 1 Syncro.

I had looked at the manuals on Abu Garcia and found them for apparently newer reels only. They do have the schematic for my reel but, it doesn't say which way to turn the dial.

They kept it simple on the adjustment while assuming that everyone was a Boyscout at one time.

Righty tighty and lefty loosey.

More weight requires a bit of tightening to control the backlash and vice versa on lighter weight.

As you go through life and develop a feel for your equipment, eventually you will not even use the cast control as your thumb will be the ultimate gauge.

As the Boy Scouts get older they learn a new saying to avoid backlash and a time consuming backlash:

"Don't be dumb and use the thumb"

It takes time to get the feel but once you do, it adds more to your productive fishing time and less time trying to figure out how to set the magnets. [cool]

Thanks tubeN2,

It's been years since I've used that reel much. That adjustment has only slight control and can be hard to tell which way it is working.

As I get the centrifugal brake adjusted properly, the magnetic brake has a more noticeable effect. And, as you say, it appears to be righty-tighty and lefty-loosey.

I'm getting the feel of the reel again and using my thumb more and more. Still, I'm impressed with the fine control of the magnetic brake.

[#0000FF]All you ever learned as a boy scout was how to start a fire by rubbing two girl scouts together.
