Starvation Perch Hunt 1/20/17
#1
I have ice fished Starvation a couple times this ice season in search for perch and wasn't able to locate any in the usually accessible places. Friday I decided to head out to an area that I remember produced nice perch a few years ago. I packed the sled light and left the power auger, shelter and chair at the truck. Walking to the area wasn't as tough as I thought it would be once I was on the ice. I drilled the first hole and checked for fish and depth with the Lowrance HDS 5. 48 feet and fish on the bottom! I dropped a Swedish pimple tipped with perch meat to the bottom and it was "Game On" for an hour and then the bite slowed down. I ended up with 25 perch and 2 walleye during the short frenzy. All but 4 of the perch were 10 - 12". The walleye were small 12 and 14". Ice conditions were great for walking with about 7" of clear ice and 1" of snow on top.

I'm guessing you mean that there were perch on the bottom? and how many? I've been wanting to hit up starvation, but I haven't seen any successful reports for perch yet. Any additional info would be nice. Not asking for your sweet spot but numbers and size would be nice.

Hey Ron, glad you had a successful trip. It's snowing too hard to follow your footprints but there is always "Waterboarding". I'm glad to see you had a very productive trip. When I get back from Cascade we'll have to give it another try on Starvy.

Congrats, better than my report. We made swiss cheese for 2hr and couldn't locate fish from 10-40+ feet.

Glad you found them, could a person still use a wheeler out there still? We did for a bit but once I found slush we walked the rest of the way as the ice seemed to get thinner.

Good report, glade the fish found you, I know they are real good hiders. Last Summer after two days of 30 mph wind I fished for three hours the hole week end. Did find the walleye at 43 feet. Caught three by rumming a 3 oz bottom bouncer and worm, along the cliffs.
I fished out of the marine camp ground, would you know if I could run a atv off the beach onto the ice there?

The conditions on the lake are very different depending where you go. The north end of the lake froze first and has more snow. The edges wherever I have gone have been solid. So getting on shouldn't be a problem. We received several inches over night so i'm not sure of the current conditions on the lake.

The boat ramps would be the best place to access the lake with ATVs or snowmachines. I know the State Park would prefer you used the boat ramps. There is a good chance the snow on the beach is too deep now for an ATV.

Great report! I was wondering about conditions for the Tightlines tournament there this weekend. Do you know what the marina looks like? I know they would like parking for about 500 people. I'm also wondering how the tournament was this weekend?

The tournament held Saturday was fun. The fishing not so great. My son took 3rd place with this 18 inch rainbow. He was the only one in our group of four to catch a fish. In fact 2 of us didn't even have a bite the whole time. Very few fish marked during the day. First and second place fish were in the 19 inch range.
