Well since I heard the news yesterday about the end is near. I took today off work and went to big blue. Made it through the 11" of new snow on the roads in time to beat the two avalanches. Was the only person foolish enough to go today. Hit the marina about 7:00 and there was at least a foot of new snow there but 4WD got me to the end of the north jetty. Scouted a path but the south end was open water so I had to make a new trail to the north, after falling in several holes between rocks until I was high centered and singing a high pitched tune, I finally got down the ice. It looked terrible and I was all alone so I got all my self rescue gear set and started out on drilling holes every little ways. There ended up being 7" of ice but the top 5" was cloudy nasty stuff with 2" of good black ice on bottom. After the check trip I went back and got my light weight gear and headed out. (Fell between two more rocks but got out). Anyway once on the ice it continued snowing most of the morning until there was 8-10" more snow then I got a hit and hooked up and it was a good fish I could hardly get it off bottom and it took two runs on me and the second time it spit the hook out. I was major bummed. As the day went on the snow turned to rain and the slush monster attacked. Before long there was 3" of water on the ice. I got 5 more hits and drops through the day and finally nailed a 23" beautiful native cutthroat, after a couple pics I sent him back. He really didn't fight much at all. Around noon my day got really good other than the hurricane winds that kept scattering my gear. I had a fish come in under me on the finder and it kept chasing my jig up and down. It hit twice and I didn't hook it and then it was gone. Couple minutes later it came back and nailed my jig and I set the hook and the battle was on. Took me about 15 minutes to finally land it but as it swam by I thought I had a king salmon on, at least it looked like they did in Alaska. It was a totally beautiful fish and I was really lucky to land it. But that's when my luck changed, my phone fell in the slush/ water so I couldn't get it to take decent pictures. The native cutt measured just shy of 28" but I couldn't hold it still and flat to get a good picture. The one I got it's middle had sunk in the slush so it only showed 27" and then the phone died and I had to let the fish go. Wish I would have measured the girth so I could try a mount. Anyway I stayed till 2:30 and the wind was so strong and I finally soaked through so I quit. BTW love my Frabill gloves and jacket and striker bibs well worth the money. As I was leaving there were 3" of water on top melting all the snow and the ice was really deteriorating fast. As I got to shore the wind had opened a 6-8" crack I had to hop over and I was afraid the edges would give way. Luckily they held. After finding the canyon was closed I headed home through strawberry canyon. On the way I seen open water at Lakota and ice clearing fast. The whole north end appeared to be open water so I'm afraid the end is very near, maybe tonight. It was a long 2.5 hour drive home but I'm sure glad I took one more chance. Figured the cutt was around 10 lbs at least. Later J

I'm keeping my fingers crossed and hoping it will hold till more cold can heal it, but I'm afraid the writing was on the wall. Thanks. J

Wow, guess I shouldn't have wimped out and joined you yesterday. I was hoping to go tomorrow but after seeing your pictures and reading your report, it looks like I'd be wasting gas. Maybe I'll try to hike into Lost Creek instead. Nice fish.

Hey that fish was caught before. It had a BFT sticker on it. Does that make it a tagged fish? Nice fish. [fishon]

Nice fish, Skunked! You're braver than I am. When the ice starts getting sketchy I don't think I have big boy shorts big enough. I've got self rescue gear and am confident I could crawl out if I fell in, but I am also a tightwad and more than anything don't want to replace any gear that goes to Davy Jones while I'm self rescuing. I guess nothing risked, nothing gained. The risk seemed to pay off for you with some beautiful fish. My personal best on Bear Lake was a 29" hatchery cutthroat caught trolling. My ice trips have never been that successful.
Thanks for the report!

Thanks Larry, yup I sort of expected to see you there... But it was a cold nasty day and fairly slow fishing too, but at least there was some nice quality in the fish that did bite... Didn't see any sign of cisco at all and not many fish on the finder... Most I seen ended up biting, just not much around.... Not like last week when I seen lots of fish around... Well I sure hope it isn't over, but I'm afraid it is... Later J

Made me nervous just reading your post. Too many people have fallen through bad ice this year. No fish is worth that. The cutts look healthy, and will be there in the spring.

Hey I should get a prize for catching a tagged fish huh? Luckily my label stuck to the fish so I could get it in the photo for the contest.. Between the wind and the camera swimming on me, it was a tough day getting pictures... I really wish I would have had someone there to take a picture of me holding that fish so you could really tell the size of it... Somehow you just can't tell the difference between a 12" and a 32" when they both fit the same on a computer screen.... Oh well it was a beauty and it's still there swimming to be caught again... Oh don't be mean telling me something I know is true but don't want to hear... Dang I've had fun this winter, I sure don't want it to be over already... Although I'm fine with the snow melting, I don't want the ice gone quite yet... Please just one more weekend..... Later J

It really wasn't that bad when I got there, the day took it's toll on the ice and like I said I went very light weight on the trip, most of my gear was in the truck, I didn't want to loose anything either, so two poles and a bucket, finder and auger... I'd hate to loose that finder, but the sonar phone finder was under $150 so it's not like a real expensive finder, even though it works better than my expensive one for ice fishing... Plus I had already went out and checked the ice with only me and my nils auger on the first trip to make sure it was good... It didn't show any issues either so I knew I was good for the short distance I went out.... I'm really an ice chicken, just ask my dad or brother.... Later J

Bear Lake simply doesn't last long enough with ice... I've learned the last couple years that it doesn't wait to fit my schedule, that's why I took vacation and went on a sketchy day... I love fishing that pond on the hard deck and you get so few days per year it has to be a premium on my schedule... It really wasn't a very good day for fishing, it was slow, but I'll take what I can get... I was still hoping for a good day on Bear Lake where you catch a half dozen fish or so, but that didn't happen for me this year... but I had a blast every trip even though it was slow... Thanks for the kind words and hope you can make it next year, or let's hope it's still got ice after the weekend and then maybe next week we can try it again... Later J

It really wasn't as bad as it appeared, I am very careful and don't push my luck since I don't like getting wet... Two weekends ago, I was over there when the polar plunge was happening and folks were walking all over very thin sketchy ice not even thinking twice about checking or knowing what they were on... That's what scares me, and that's when they fall through... I know there are always thin spots that you don't expect and that scares me, but I try to calculate my risk and hope I don't try to cut the margin too close... But for the most part I don't go if I think there's a good chance I may get wet... and I am chicken... Later J

That's the way to do it. Manning up and getting it done. I'm a worse ice chicken than you I don't even go. That is a really nice fish, any good taxidermist could mount it from just that picture and your guesstimates.

Hey Rod, thanks, it was a fun one... Now I need to decide if I could afford a mount and if my wife would let it in the house if I did get one mounted... Would be cool, but probably have better spots to use the money so probably won't do it.... Well get ready for the soft water season, will be here very soon... Later J

Hey Derek, yup I didn't know how close I came to floating off. Mike told me the ice floated off to the east side over night. So I guess it's probably over dang it. Next year. Later J
