It took 4 lakes before we found good ice
#1
Wiperslayer and I decided to hit Rockport this morning but there was no edge ice we could get on[Sad], 8 ft gap or more around much of the shore. Same thing at Echo, so we went up to East canyon, pretty much the same story there. We decided to give it one more shot and headed up to Lost Creek, Bingo finally some good ice but deep snow to get on the ice. We made it down to the ice a little after 10am and I know it was kind of late for trout fishing but it was the only game in town, so we went for it. Ice was good, about 12" but the top 8" was white with 4" or less of the dark ice at the bottom. As you can imagine the catching was slow but 4 trout decided to play so it wasn't a total loss. There were two snow mobiles on the ice when we arrived and because of the deep snow along the shore I not sure an ATV could make it. Once on the ice, the day got warmer and 3" of slush showed up in some areas but I've seen a lot worse, so at least we found some good ice to fish. Sorry, no pics but I will say there was very little area to park at the top of the dam and no way to drive over the dam without a snow mobile. If you go, get there early or you may be out of luck. Hope this helps those of you that are going out this weekend.

Thanks for the report! I admire your determination to hit the ice. I keep thinking some ice will be left for the weekend, but I get less hopeful each day...

With your report, looks like Lost Creek is an option. I am guessing everyone else will be heading to Strawberry so I expect parking to be tough.

I still haven't settled on a place (of if we are going), but options are getting slim!! [Sad]

Welcome to the site RBB, sounds like Mantua is still doable as well.

Thanks for that report there was a lot of good info there. Sad to hear so many lakes may be done for the season already. Hope I can sneak in a few more days next week before they all go away. [fishon]

Curt that is a great update, will answer lots of questions for tomorrow... Doesn't look good anywhere... DjHill16 noted in another post that Porcupine also has 8' edge margins... Cutler dam and the Bear River in Cache Valley is opening up... River is full open and only marginal ice in the back sloughs... Yesterday it was reported that Hyrum was still fishable, but I expect the edge margins to widen there as well... Doesn't look good... Bear Lake the ice blew east on Tuesday night so it was open water on the west side on Wednesday, not sure what the east side is like, but with five inches to start with and everything that has happened this week I don't expect it will be fishable either... Not a lot of options this weekend... Later J

Good info. Curt, thanks. At least all 4 reservoirs are in fairly close proximity.

Yea, they were pretty close, just too bad we got to LC so late, I'm sure we could have done better being earlier but it was good to find a place with melting.

You were lucky you got up to BL when you did Jeff, nice going on the cutts you caught. Before you know it Willard will be ice free I bet, certainly by next month if these temp stay[crazy].

I knew BL wouldn't last long so I decided to burn the day off, but I didn't think I would be the last to fish it on the ice this year. I did get lucky on those fish. Sure we're pretty. The way things look up here I'm thinking the ice is all but done. Crazy fast melt this year. Well let's get ready for the wiper. Later J
