Pineview Fri. P.M. - Browning Pt.
#1
A friend and I gave it a go, even in the rain...you betcha we checked the edges and general ice condition before bringing our sleds down....A bit soggy and sloppy, but no issues....staying on the main snowmobile trails kept us out of the 6" slush, and lead pretty close to where we set up, in 38 FOW....we were going to look for 45 to 50, but we were seeing fish right away, so just stayed....And you know how hard it is to move your tent and all gear in the rain, or snow....we fished from 5:00 to 8:30...fish were not real aggressive, unless we dropped a Gulp Minnow down...sometimes they'd hit it hard....at times waxies worked, and butterworms, but the minnows were most consistent....nice limit of average sized crappie...Tks esp. to Squawminnow for the info on Browning Pt. access....2 other groups seen at Browning, and 1 at Cemetery, and a group of 4 coming in as we were leaving at about 9:00....they were braver than us.....Guluk...

Thanks for the report Joe, any of the crappie over 10' that you caught? Did you setup your tent on the snowmobile trail? Since you got there before dark, did you catch any perch?

Hey Curt -- no perch takers, and largest 6or 7 were 10"ers, the rest 9 to 91/2....since it was my first time in this area, and since it was just starting to rain when we got out, we looked for an area where others had been before us, and that spot was packed down nicely, no slush, for my tent....there also were a lot of holes in the area, so we figured someone must have been doing ok here....Anyhow, I should have checked the depth in those holes right away before setting up our tent, but I guess we were in too big a hurry to get out of the rain....at Sqawminnow's recommend, I wanted to fish at 45 - 50', and maybe that's why we weren't constantly on fish....but we still had a good time and got our fish, just took a little longer, and longer fishing is fine with me.....

I'm glad you guys were able to fish safe and get on some fish. It's supposed to get a little colder and cold night temps so hopefully I can get back out. My last trip out with friends was incredible. Best part was I never needed to change jigs. I got the VMC Chandelier Jig in orange/glow and it was great tipped with Gulp minnow or waxies.

What size do like the most and can you buy them locally?

Well thats not too bad, the 8" crappie are a little small imo but 9" plus are decent. If you limited out in 3 to 3.5 hours thats not bad at all. Thanks for the info.

I use 1/8th oz. and picked them up at Scheels. They have a nice selection of VMC tackle!

I got the 1/8 oz size at Cabelas. I found that size is too heavy for one type of spring bobber I have but worked great with a different one. The 1/16 oz jig might be a better option, but I'll stick with this one till I lose it. It will be a while, the only place I ever break off ice gear is the rock pile at Bear Lake.

Are you guys covering each hook with bait, or maybe replacing the treble with a single hook? Nice looking lure...do you use it for perch also?
