Minersville - Ice free

A couple of us made the drive to Minersville today for some soft water action. We fished from 9:00 until 2:00 and caught all rainbows in the 12" - 20" range. We used slow to medium sinking lines with size 6-8 bead head leeches, woolly buggers, and crystal buggers. The ice is gone except a little near the inlet. The water temperature was 39 - 40 degrees and the visibility in the water of about 4'. The reservoir level is around 37% full and rising which is near normal for this time of year. There were a few bank anglers indicator fishing along with a couple of pontooner's that were also indicator fishing and they were also catching some fish.

It was a calm day, which is rare for Minersville and the fishing was just fast enough that we didn't dose off between fish.[]

Wow thanks for the report. It's about 3 weeks early though! Hope there is some kind of great "ice-off" type fishing this year.

I have to "one up" you. But you have to consider that no wind at all isn't necessarily a good thing. With temps in the 90's, and bugs coming off the water so thick that you need a mask to filter the air just to breath, sometimes you wish for a breeze!

Where do you get the info on how full the lakes are? I'd like to follow a few this year as the snow pack melts.

Looks like good times. Minersville is one of my favorites when the fish are biting and the lake is calm.

I've always figured Minersville to be ice off, or ice free by Valentines.

Not enough to ice fish of course, but large sheets floating around.

You have to look for the irrigation company that owns the water. The Sevier River Water users have a fantastic website that gives information for that whole system:

But for Minersville, it is harder to find good info. Rocky Ford Irrigation company doesn't have a site like the Sevier River Water Users. In this case, you have to look at sites like the USGS and look at stream flow info:

Unfortunately, the USGS does not have any data for the reservoir (Minersville).

Sounds like you guys already started tying into some fish! That's pretty good for early April.

Is there an end of the lake that is more productive in the spring? I'm headed to Minersville next Friday with a buddy of mine and its our first time.

Any info on what sections of the lake fish better and effective patterns would be greatly appreciated!
