Willard on the water report 2-26
#1
Hello Yall,

Took the boat and headed north to fish Willard. Launch out of the north marina about noon. Did not check the depth at the ramp but unless you are trying to launch a Carnival Cruise Ship you will be just fine. Headed strait to the light pole in tiny white caps. Cruisin depth was 25-26'. Drug Cranks on boards. Not a single Wiper or Catfish or Crappie or Walleye. I don't know what it is with me and foul hooking carp dragging cranks but sure enough, I snagged a Utah Golden Salmon (Carp) right in the sphincter. Oh such fun. I did this same exact thing on my first trip last year up there.

Did not see any ice floating.

Water temp was 35.5ish most of time I glanced at it.

Cheers

Thanks, TC. I don't generally start fishing until the cherry trees bloom. That is right about when the water hits 50° or so. This year might be different. We'll see.

Is the Bay all open water now?
Looks like it is getting close to time to get the boat out there.
Thanks for the report.

Thanks for the report. I have often had the same luck at other lakes throwing jigs. The first fish in the spring and the last fish in the fall often seem to the wrong kind of golden[Tongue]

try slowing it down .6 to 1.2 works in the cold water..also try storms thin fins blueback and chrome its an old bait but it still works just a suggestion

I have been reading this forum for a couple of years - never posted until now. Foul hooked in the sphincter had me in stitches - that is a classic. Oh man - can't wait to share that one with my Dad. What a thread to make an inaugural post.

I went to Willard for the first time in 30+ years last year in the late Spring. Billions of bugs was not a pleasant experience. What were/are the bugs like now?

This is an awesome forum. I really appreciate all of the insight offered in nearly every post.

Hooked in the sphincter - too funny.

To BradJ,

There are not any bugs now, just a little chili for them. The bugs get really bad towards the end of May and once June hits I stop bringing lunch along and I just swallow bugs all day. I stay plenty full.

I am glad you got a laugh. Not a made up story. Right in the blow hole.......

Welcome BradJ.
Bugs at Willard are pretty much a way of life during the summer. That's why lots of us pray for light wind to keep the bugs down, but not strong enough to start up white caps. If you are in a small boat or canoe or tube, and it starts to blow up 2 to 3 foot white caps, best advice is get into a marina soon as possible.
Oh and best defense I've found for the bugs....get a fine mesh head net from Wal-Mart camping equipment area. About $5.00 or less. They can be a bit hot in mid summer, but very good at keeping the bugs out of face & ears.

Sounds like now is a good time to go. I'm going to check it out on Sunday. If I get into anything exciting I will be sure to post it.
