Aaaa... man it was a purrty day at Lincoln today. Got there about 8-ish and had no trouble launching. Skim of ice in channel but nothing serious. About 1.8 deep under my transducer. Water temp was 39 and hit 43 when I left at noon.
Here the tail:
FACT: Only your better fishermen catch the elusive and mystical walleye. I have perfected by skills as a walleye fisherman, made my on lures, my own carbon fiber rods, studied the habits of the eye, his favorite foods and the best time to fish for the greatest catch. I pride myself in this special skill and hereby submit the attached picture as proof of my prowess.
ALTERNATIVE FACT: I was soaking a piece of wb trying to catch a catfish when a really dumb walleye took my bait.
Believe either FACT you want to. The walleye will taste the same tonight.
Lots of bank tangles at the spring and everyone was catching wb by the buckets full.
I caught four catfish, all in the 24 - 26 inch range. I'm gonna post all of them on the contest page just so the score page is not so naked.
Should be another beautiful day tomorrow but I'll miss it because of a funeral. Storm coming Monday but nice weather again later next week. I'll be there.
Go get 'em.

[#0000FF]Nice work. Looks like that wallie was at least a two footer. But I gotta say it is a bit lean. I suspect a lot of them have not been eating as well with the decline in white bass numbers.
It really does take a special skill to holler out over the water that you are fishing for catfish...or white bass...and that you do not want any walleyes. Then...fishing being what it is...those silly walleyes think they are gonna mess with ya and take the bait or lure meant for the other fish.
I still maintain that there are more walleye caught by accident than by design.
You have probably already read my reply to your email. We gonna "hook up" next week and gang up on 'em. Might even jinx myself by throwing stuff specifically for walleyes.
Nice work on the kitties, by the way. Glad you left my yardlongs alone until I get there to play with them. Got a new 36" bumpboard that I gotta check out. It will take a fish of at least that length to put it to the test.
I think it's gonna be a good year. Starting early and should last until the final bell dings. More water and more fish. What more could we ask?

Good job Lynn. I will try my luck before you and Pat catch them all. Going to be at the pond tomorrow.

Sounds like you tapped into some Jed"eye" mind tricks with that one. "This IS the net your looking for!". Stuff like that is what makes fishing so great.

I would like to like to think it was a mind trick!
I'm pretty sure it was the was the combination of struggling sounds and maybe a little blood in the water from the whities I had on my stringer.
I think she came looking for an easy meal and became one.

[#0000FF]Back in the days when I was younger and MORE dedicated/foolish I fished at night during the annual walleye spring fling. There were more than a few occasions when clusters of lust-crazed wallies would come thrashing and splashing near me as I mindlessly cast into the darkness. It can be scary. Loch Utah monsters and all that.
On one such trip the guy I was fishing with reached out with his large diameter landing net and scooped a large female and three smaller males all in one dip. After we whooped and hollered a bit, he did release the fish to complete their orgy. But we did witness other not-so-righteous anglers keeping the fish they scooped...without benefit of lip hooking.

I have heard of that kind of spawning behavior. I would like to "see" it someday. I might have to anchor in shallow on a calm spring night (if there ever is one) and listen.
My volunteer came almost at dusk during the first few days of June. The whites were in there feeding of young of the year something and there were a few large eyes in with them.

[#0000FF]Those times are rare. And they are more likely to occur when the waves are being blown into a rocky shoreline. That's what the walleyes (and white bass) like for non-tributary spawning.
In June and July there are lots of baby carp and white bass in the shallows. And the predators follow. Both of those prey species get larger fairly quickly and are 4-5 inches by the end of summer. But the larger cats and walleyes (and northern pike) just love them.
I once got into a whole food chain right at daybreak one morning at Sandy Beach...the mouth of the Spanish Fork River. As it began to get light there were small hatchlings (bluegill, crappies, white bass) making little rings on the surface as they dined on newly emerging midges in the shallows. Soon there were splashes as white bass moved in to feed on the little tykes. Then there were some big swirls a little further out as something larger took out some of the whities.
As I started kicking out away from shore in my float tube, the end jig on my tandem jig rig dipped down onto the surface of the water and a white bass took it. When that fish pulled it down a ways, the top jig reached the water and was instantly chomped by a second white bass. A double while my rod was still in the holder.
I got rid of those two white bass as fast as possible and kept my rod higher while kicking back a ways. Then I picked up a rod rigged with a 3" plastic and chucked it out. First couple of casts the bigger jig was hammered by other white bass. Then a retrieve was stopped with a CHOMP. 24" walleye. The first of several before the sun got higher and the food chain dispersed. Fun Fun.

One of the cats I caught yesterday took the opportunity to barf up a little mess for me to clean up. All that was left of a wb meal. Most of the half digested wb came out with the bones. Still, he was hungry enough to take my chunk of wb. Yuck.
