Went out this morning on the South East corner. Kept 12 big gills, all over 8", including 2 right at 10", 2 decent perch, and 1 2lb bass. Ice is going south quickly. There's about 8" of rotten ice with maybe 3-4" of good under it.

Thanks BAC! It is fun catching fish that shallow and being able to let all the links go. Although I guess you don't have to worry about that anywhere on that pond.

That's true, not a deep lake. I was still shocked to find that many in that shallow. Seems like as the ice comes off they start moving shallower.

Curt -- guess I'll just add on here instead of starting a new post.... I was out here today also, only saw 2 other guys on the ice....BAC, were you out today or Monday?? I didn't see anyone fishing shallow today, just me and another guy also in a red tent, and 1 guy out more toward the middle... anyhow, the ice edges were fine today, but with the warm winds today, and warm temps. coming up, I wouldn't recommend any more trips to Mantua....lots of slush on the way out at 3:30 p.m., and like BAC said, maybe only 4 inches of solid ice under a semi-frozen slush layer...fishing was good at 11fow for good sized 'gills and a couple accidental rainbows....but today was my last time here for this season of ice...Guluk....

According to the date of his post, he was out there on the 5th, which was Sunday. So the edges were fine for you getting off? No plank needed? I was thinking about driving up there tomorrow afternoon to check it out to be sure because it's suppose to be warm tomorrow.

Jmorfish, I also went yesterday morning. Caught a good bass and a couple of big gills before I put a leg through an old hole that had a ittle snow over it. I agree about the ice. That was my last trip to Mantua until ice out.

I was out there Sunday. I'm sure by now, regardless of how you get on the lake, you're pushing your luck. Last year when the ice was coming off, I took my yak on the remaining ice and slayed the gills. Hopefully can repeat.

FatBiker -- wish I'd seen you out there...did you see the 2 red tents?....wind was nasty, and had to be in the tent....I certainly understand about stepping in someone's snow covered big ice hole (my last Pineview post)....and the guy in the tent next to me had a 4 year old with him, and when he took his tent down, his little boy was running all around the place...by that time I was a block away heading back in, or I'd like to have warned him about those big, unseen ice holes....No fun...but Mantua was good to me this year....

Funny world. That was me in the other red tent with the 4 yr old and my unnecessary 10" auger. Overkill yes but I just cant justify owning 2 different augers for the different situations I fish (not my intention to rehash a previous debate about those of us with big augers). We got off the ice with no problems at all but the others are right. Tuesday was the last day I personally would want to be on that ice as warm as its been today and the rest of this week. We didnt fare so well. All we had for bait were Meal worms (the store in Mantua was all out of spikes and waxies). The thick pile of fish under us all day wouldnt hardly touch the meal worms which is normally my experience at that pond. We landed one 9.5" bull gill and one 5" perch. Had a 3-4 other small bites and 2 others hooked but shook lose. We were there most of the day.

I was there by seven and stuck my leg in the hole about 7:30. Went in all the way to mid thigh and filled my boot with water. When I left, no other fisherman on the pond. Sure hate to see it end. Had lots of luck there this winter. Taking my boat into Lee's marine in the morning. Time to start hitting Willard Bay.
