Saratoga Springs Urban Fishing
#1
[#0000ff]Hey gang, looking for some adults to help with the new Saratoga Springs Urban Fishing Program. Sounds like a localized version of the DWR youth fishing program. I am attaching an email I got from the director of the program...with his contact info. I'm sure he would appreciate any help any of us can provide. TubeBabe and I have participated in the DWR youth program in the past and I can verify it is personally rewarding...not just for the kids either.

My name is Heston Williams. I am the recreation director for Saratoga Springs. I run a small community fishing program with 25 kids. We fish the Jordan river and Utah lake for our program. The program is run mainly by volunteers. I am short on volunteers this year. I am asking parents and other fishing entities to see if I can get more.

I got your email through Sam Braegger from the Utah Lake Commission. He said you may be able to help find volunteers for my program.

I have 25 kids and I am looking to get to at least 8 volunteers so there are 2-3 kids per volunteer. Right now I am at 3-4 volunteers. The program is on Thursday evenings starting May 4th and going through June 8th. It is from 6-8pm. Each class will have a half hour lesson and then an hour and a half of open fishing time with volunteers helping.

If this is something you can help with please contact me.

If you have any questions please let me know.

Thank you

A noble and worthy cause indeed! Always fun to help kids learn to fish.

I signed up once to help with a bus load of mentally challenged kids at a fishing activity at Salem Pond. I was assigned to a 32 year-old eight-year old. He had the mentality of an eight-year old and the mouth of a 32 yea-old drill sargent. I made the mistake of being too helpful and he got mad at me and unloaded with some cuss words that I had never heard before... called me everything but a gentleman and was fixin' to thump me when I was rescued by a supervisor. After that I just held the can of worms while the "kids" fished. A good experience even if it was a bit dangerous.

I hope Mr. Williams can find the volunteers he needs. Nothin' better than seeing kids learn to fish.

Good luck to all who can find the time to help.

Thanks for spreading the word. I will see if I can make my schedule work, then give Mr. Williams a call.

Pat, I would love to help, but will be out of town for a couple of weeks the first of May. However, if they need tackle, I have 10, Zebco 33 combo's that I would gladly donate to the cause. I also have plastic baits that I can also provide along with jig heaads. Have the dude shoot me an email. I will gladly help when I get home from my trip !!

Quick update on the Urban Fishing Program. Aside from last week, with the cold and windy weather, turn out for the youth has been really good. In the cold, we managed a few crappie and some mud cats. The week before was more of the same along with a channel. This week looks to be better with the weather warming up throughout the week.
