Willard 4/22/17
#1
Fished Willard from the kayak Saturday with limited success. Launched from Pelican Beach trolling bright colored cranks south to Freeway Bay. The FF was marking quite a few fish but no takers. I turned around and trolled to the north dike to fish with some kayak buddies trying different lures and presentations on the way, still seeing fish but no takers.

Got to the north dike and cast a little bit with spoons and swim baits to change it up a some but still nothing. To this point I had been using hi-vis colors reasoning that with the lack of water clarity I needed something that would stand out. I changed to a shad colored Flicker Shad on one rod and kept a fire tiger on the other and headed south fishing a little shallower than I had been and closer to the brush.

I was seeing fish at 8-10' in 12-15' FOW and trolling deep to shallow when " bam" I got my first one. I was pretty shallow by the time I got him in the cooler so turned around and made another pass and got another on the same lure. I tied an identical Flicker shad on the other rod and proceeded to catch several more. All close to shore coming from deep to shallow water.

Later in the afternoon I met up with Obifishkenobi and went out on his boat where he gave me a tour of the lake and a tutorial on fishing with mussels. The fish didn't want to cooperate but it was fun to get out and meet a good guy and learn something new. Thanks Shawn.

Great report. It's hard to beat trolling wipers in a kayak. I saw quite a few smaller wipers near the shore towards pelican beach yesterday. As I snuck into the flooded trees there were a few wipers cruising the surface. I trolled that area but no hits. One fish was right on top and his dorsal fin was breaking the water as it took off like a little spiked shark.

Thanks for the report. What kind of kayak do you have? And you have a trolling motor mounted to it? Any pics?

Thanks Squaminnow, I never thought of getting in close and sightcasting. I'll give it a shot next time I'm there with some swim baits. Fishing Willard is kind of new to me. A lot to learn and a lot of possibilities.

RBL, I paddle an Ocean KayakTrident 13.
I got into kayak fishing about 3 years ago. My wife and I were vacationing on the Kenai Peninsula in Alaska and I was mainly wading the rivers and doing some surf casting off the Homer spit.
I took a charter in Cook Inlet and while out there saw some guys fishing from kayaks. Caught a 30# king by the way. When I got back to the motel I got on the iPad and did some research and came across a YouTube by kardinal84 fishing those same waters and also found the Northwest Kayak Anglers forum. I was hooked.
When I got home I did a lot of research and figured the Trident was the best bang for my buck. Being my first kayak and not knowing if it was something I was going to stick with I didn't want to go all out and get a Hobie. Kind of wish I had now.
I have added on some accessories with the latest being a downrigger for Kokanee and lakers when it's blowing too hard to jig. Wish I had had the downrigger last year fishing for sockeye in the salt at Vancouver Island.
It's been a good seaworthy boat and now has a bloodstained deck, but a pedal drive sure would be nice.

Sounds like a great setup, I might have to look into those more. It would be so handy for willard and other areas to get on the fish.

RBL,
Go on eBay for Ocean Kayak and you will see slightly cosmetic blemished factory 2nds from Kayak City at a much reduced price. Kayak City is in California but they will ship free to the SLC airport and you can pick it up at a warehouse. I never did find any blemishes when I got it but it sure has a lot now, the good kind.
