After several years of being not much more than a mud puddle, Newton finally has water again. Matter of fact, the campgrounds are underwater. Does anyone know if the fish, especially tiger Muskie, survived? [fishon][bobdumb]

Panfish fishing there through the ice was pretty good over the winter, including bass so many fish did survive the low water. The low water and low oxygen is certainly harder on the big 45" tigers. Newton experiences a pretty good draw down each year but those Tigers find the deep water and get through it. I didn't see any reports from fisherman or the DWR about finding dead Tigers. You better get out there Late May and try to find one.

There was a significant loss of tigers per info I received.
The future will be an outlet screen at the dam to prevent larger fish from going into canal. Additionally to jump start the tiger fishery the DNR stocked Newton last Wednesday with 2" fry. I'm unsure of the exact number so won't say but Newton did get stocked.
The issue as noted is water draw down to include no outlet screen at the dam per info I was briefed on including no conservation pool. Actual water companies in the state and said users have a big play into establishing a conservation pool.
I'm sure some tigers survived but there was a noted loss per observations per info I received.
Nice to have a huge snowpack to fill reservoirs but for future years we need a mild springs with precipitation and no beastly hot summers to start turning it around for all reservoir water levels. Establishing agreements/partnerships with various water agencies in the state on conservations pools is also needed. That's just my two cents on briefings I've attended and informal discussions.
Our Muskies, Inc. chapter is heavily involved in what is going on in the state with various waters and tiger muskies. We may be a small club but we work with various agencies establishing a positive rapport and doing what we can as a small club to help.

Thanks fellows for the information. I'm glad to hear that they did some stocking. I wonder what type of lure to use for the 2" fry.[sly]

My sources tell me the same, a lot of Tigers downstream, some in private pools, some in canal water, etc.

I have heard the same thing about the tigers going out the canals and down the spill... I fished the ice there last winter and the crappie are doing well along with gills and bass... couple perch too... Nothing as big as other spots, but still some fish to chase... Hopefully a couple years from now, it will be reestablished and get doing great again.. Have not seen or heard of a tiger in there for the last two years, but ya never know... Good luck.. J
