Went to Willard this morning fishing for wipers. We were fishing from the bank of the south side using mussels. We caught the our first fish at 9:15 and the second around 9:45. They were both about average size. The fish would always hit our rods hard once and the bait would always be gone so I was wondering how I could prevent this a little more, we use size to J-hooks and wrap the mussels around the hook a little? We were satisfied with our catches from since other fisherman weren't having much luck either.

There is a product made for holding bait on a hook called Magic Thread. You can buy it at Sportsmans Warehouse. It is an elastic thread that you wrap around the bait and hook. I have used it to hold bait onto a barbless hook for sturgeon fishing. A few wraps around the hook, a few wraps around the bait and pull, a couple more wraps around the bait, pull and cut (break with hand). Cost about $2.50 and will tie on probably 40-50 baits.

We were using that and it still came off a lot. We used about 6 inches of thread per bait.

[#800000]You might want to try spawn (egg) sacks next time. Prepare them at home before you go fishing. Store them in a plastic container and keep them cool until ready to use. Lots of videos around to show you how.[/#800000]

Try using those clear rubber bands that people use to put in kids hair. I use them and they work great.

We used mussels a lot in the ocean in So Cal. Always used sewing thread wrapped until you thought it as good.

I'll try that next time and I'll also try the sewing thread and little rubber bands. I'll do some research on how to make the egg sacks. Thanks for the suggestions!!
