Pineview Waves Question
#1
How high are the waves at Pineview when the wind is blowing 12 mph? Are they too high for a light weight 14' aluminum rowboat to be manageable with an electric trolling motor?

I can't speak for PV much, because I rarely troll there but when fishing Willard, when the wind gets over 10 mph trolling starts to get tough and by the time they hit 15 mph I'm looking for the closest shore, depending on the direction of the wind. On either lake, be very careful when fishing in a 14' aluminum rowboat, with an electric trolling motor. It depends on how high your sides are but wind blowing at 12 mph can be very dangerous. The good thing is at PV the wind blowed up or down the canyon on most days, so you can get out of the worst of it by staying out of the narrows and swim beach area.

Depending on the day at pine view the waves from the power squad can be just as dangerous! Those idiots pay zero mind to the guy fishing in the little boat and the legal distance between boats means nothing so beware of that as well!!

Thank you all for the great information. If the Huntsville weather report is forecasting 12 mph winds, will there still be relatively calm places on the lake if the wind is mainly up and down the canyon?

There should be. Look at it on Google Earth there should be dates that show the usual wind patterns and the calmer spots to fish on windy days.

I was a Deer Creek Saturday and fished most of the day with little more than a chop on the water. Now out on the main part of the lake was anther story.

Usually the wind does not blow that hard all day, mornings are usually not bad but I agree with a_bow_nut, you can usually find an area that isn't too bad.

At Pineview, I would not be concerned so much about the wind as the boat wakes. The power squadron will make it more uncomfortable for you than the wind !!! You will have boats go by you at full throttle, within 20-30 ft. Great fun !!!

Back when I had a little pontoon, I would put in at the little free parking lot near the Port Marina. I discovered that the morning wind would take me gently down the Narrows with no effort. About 10 am, it would go calm and let me paddle around near the barrier, fishing that cove on the North side and eat lunch.

Then, between 11 and noon, the wind would pick up in the opposite direction and waft me gently right back up the Narrows to my launch spot. Magic canyon winds!

And, it let me stay in the No Wake zone the whole day.
