Fish finder side imaging

Going to upgrade my fishfinder on my one man pontoon boat. Would a unit with side imaging work at the slower speeds? Would there be issues mounting the transducer to keep it from picking up my legs and flippers? Just wondering if side imaging would be worth it or just stick with a down imaging only finder.

I thought someone would weigh in on this by now but in reading about this when I got my sidefinder you need to be going fairly fast, around 5 mph, if I remember correctly. This might have changed by now but it should be close to that speed.

there is some good SI fish finders but they cost. and SI is hard to learn how to read
it takes time on the water and watching a lot of youtube.

MY SI works OK going slow but they tell you, you need to go faster to get a good image . and SI works better when the water is not to deep.
and if you get one that is not very big like 5" I think it would be hard to read.

I prefer to be going about 5 mph when I use my side imaging. That being said, I have notice that side imaging will mark sturgeon moving through when I am anchored up. The biggest problem I see for you would be that side imaging is at its best with a large screen. Also, it works best when the boat moves smoothly through the water. Not sure if that would be a problem for you or not.

Don't waste your money on SI on a kickboat. You will most likely be slow drifting or still fishing most the time. A good down scan is what I would have. There are some real nice finders now a days and each has it use.

I do perfectly fine with a portable unit. It's light has it's own battery and works damn well so far.

With any you purchase learning how to set it up manually and turning the fish ID off will help a bunch and get you reliable marks.

One this that has worked for me is to adjust the screen speed to match my boat speed, I get better pictures doing that, it would depend on if you can maintain a speed, if you are just using your flippers I would not recommend any imagine, If you have a motor to maintain speed you will have to play with it to figure out what works best for your situation.
