Provo Harbor fishing 2/22/19
#1
Pisco, joatmon and I went fishing at Provo Harbor last night. Brett (my little bro, joatmon) beat us there by about an hour , about 3:30. When we arrived he had a passel of white bass and one perch on the dock beside him already. We wanted to catch some fresh bait for catfish so we were encouraged. To make a long story short, we both caught a few bass while joatmon kicked our tails by landing 26. Ratfinkees and tungsten jigs in green tipped with waxworms, meal worms or bass meat worked best though pink and white also produced. We fished right on the bottom, 7 fow, and jigging seemed to work best. The bite was very light. Brett was using spring bobbers and was constantly dragging another one in. He was watching for the negative bite. The bite died sometime after sunset. At dark Brett headed home to fillet his fish and Jim and I switched over to catfish rigs then watched from the van for any action. No such luck.

The ice was about 2" on the southern exposure of the end of the dock where we fished. Earlier in the day Jim had seen a guy walk out on the ice a way. I think the ice would have been thick enough to get out on if we had started out from the inner (north) side of the slips. There was open water not too far out west toward the channel.

We were hopeful that we could land bigger white bass than we already had on the contest board. Didn't happen. I needed an 11.5"er and Brett needed a 12. They topped out at around 11.25.

The older I get the more I would rather be considered a good man than a good fisherman.

Hey Craig, thanks for posting the report. It was fun to get out although that NW wind remended me why I'm not on the ice more.

On the dark side of the dock I measured 3.5 inches of ice, but seeing only 2" on the sunny side makes me think the docks were the best places to fish.

It was great to meet Joatman. I remember when we arrived I saw the memorable image of this guy jigging a rod in each hand and over ten fish on the dock. He just kept catching them and when it was almost time for him to leave I kept hearing “just one more fish" over the howling wind! Great guy!

My son sent me this picture. At first I thought it was Joatman at our Provo ice fishing trip on Friday, but then I read the caption[Wink]

Ha, ha, that's a good one. What kind of fish is that anyway?
