Strawberry report 2/22 and 2/23
#1
Went up to the marina Friday night with a few teenagers. Fun to listen to them talk. The communication methods are different than I was their age but the boys still awkwardly try to talk to girls.
We went just east of the lodge. Snow was 6-12” on top of layers of junk and then plenty of ice. The auger went down a couple of feet to hit the water. We fished for a few hours. Used a variety of plastic jigs, but only iced 1 cut. We had a bunch on but couldn’t get them to the hole. The fish seemed to prefer smaller 1” jigs. Bait was meal worm or wax worm. Plenty of fish on the sonar, just not a lot of takers. Boys had a good time and want to go again. I consider that a win.

Saturday was old men time. We hit chicken creek east and should have taken the advice of the DWR officer. He said the reports from the guys coming off the ice were slow fishing. Being men, of course we didn’t listen.
We used paddle, cutters, other random jigs. Bait was also random. The fish didn’t seem to have a preference and unfortunately, there weren’t tons of takers. Everyone caught fish but it was similar to the night before. Lots of fish on the screen with tight lips.
The ice conditions were more difficult than at the marina. There were deep drifts along the path down to the lake. Once on the water it was hit and miss. Sometimes not bad and then there would be the dreaded hidden slushmonster minefields.
