Alone on the Bear
#1
Yesterday, Saturday 31 Aug was first day of a 9 day off break for me. Was able to get up to the Bear River early just a little before sun rise. I never get tired of watching the sun come up over those east mountains. But anyway, the morning started out beautiful with the promise to be a very nice weather day. Air temp a comfortable 64, light constant breeze, perfect for keeping the pesky bugs and biting flies down. Now, if the fish would be as cooperative the day could be great.

Was on the water just at first good light and decided to head down river toward the bridges. Set up anchor about 75 yards up river from the bridges and set out lines toward the gates. Lots of surface Carp slurpin and slappin. And that was what I was looking for. All I had for bait was night crawlers and was hoping the bugle mouths would decide they wanted some.

Well it took about 3 hours, and moving to a couple other spots back up river before I got anything more than just the little bait stripping nibbles. Not the biggest baddest Cat in the river, but a healthy young lady that shows promise for the future if she can survive a few more years.

2 more location moves and even a slow troll up river a couple bends dragging a small ascending Shad Rap with no more action. Got up to one of the deeper holes and boated second, even smaller kitty.

Finally, at the last stop, a deep spot where 2 irrigation channels and the river converge, was down to my last 2 worms and ready to call it a day. One rod with a 6/0 Octopus hook bends back and drag screams out. Fish running hard down river made it tough getting the rod out of the holder. Lots of weight, lots of fight. Was sure hoping that was the illusive 36 inch Cat we all hope for at the river [cool] but no.......not in my cards that day. But for my needs, something almost as good, maybe......... a big, full of fight, Golden Bugle Mouth. Spent about 10 minutes working him to the boat and into the net............drop him in the boat, and just barely get a photo when my second pole does a total mirror image of the first one. Drag screams out, rod bends over, jams up in the rod holder.......and ohhhh shooooot.....that ones running back at me.......reeeeeeeel fast...... there, got him into net range, almost, just lift the rod a bit, 6 more inches, SNAP !! Oh crap............no, line didn't break. That was the pole I had a smaller #4 bait hook on..hook bent almost straight out, came unbuttoned. BIG Carp waved his middle fin and headed back down river.

Well, very last 2 worms ALMOST caught me enough Carp to do several days river fishing the next 8 days, maybe I'll get one of those bigger Cats that seem to be coming out of hiding recently.

It's been pretty slow on the river lately. I fished it last night and got the big skunk.

Yep, wife and I fished it Sunday. I got 1 small Cat and she got NONE.
Then we went out on the boat today. She got 4 baby Cats, I got none [laugh]

That's the way it goes. Saw quite a few of the regular bank tanglers and one flat bottom boat on the water when we got there. They passed us a bit later and said they had got one 10 lb. and a couple 3 lb. Cats.

Thanks for a great report. Every time I have a fish take off like that, I think carp. I haven't had to land one of those lately though. I hope you enjoy your break and get some good fish.

I can't remember that last time I had 9 days without work, but I'm glad I have the work!

So I'll tell you a secret , don't tell anyone.
My daughter surprised us with a mid week visit. Usually see her on Sunday.
Was fixing some fish from the freezer, told her we were having some of my special Alaskan cod. Deep fried it up and served the cod, that had whiskers, from Willard bay. She loved it !!
Made sandwiches latter and used the rest of it. Wonderful.
Used McCormick Fish 'n Chips batter. Really like that.
