Catchinon and I met dubob at the Chevron in Kamas at 7 am (yes, I had a donut!) and convoyed up to Trial Lake from there. Our intent was to catch some of the species we missed on previous trips (brookie and grayling for Craig, tiger and grayling for me). Air temperature was 22 degrees when we arrived and 34 degrees when we left at 2:00. The wind was pesky and not only made it feel much colder but made us secure everything. The ice seemed a little thinner than the 6-7 inches we saw the previous trip.
We started near the shallower northeast end of the lake in 6-8 fow, where Bob quickly caught a couple of trout. Craig and I weren’t even getting any hits, although I did see a couple swim by on the flasher. We eventually moved out and further southwest and ended up in about 12 fow.
Craig and I finally started catching fish, although the brookies and grayling eluded us. Bob did catch at least one brookie. I caught a few tigers, so checked that one off my list (see photo). We also caught plenty of planter rainbows, including a few pretty darker ones (see photo).
For those wanting to get out, please remember your ice cleats! Somehow I ended up with half a pair and had to penguin walk everywhere. Bob had a better pair on that I was quite jealous of. We sometimes focus so much on tackle, we forget the other items for comfort and safety. Also, yes you do need a pass ($6 for 3-day pass at several roadside self-serve stations).
Thanks Bob and Craig for a memorable trip!
